Part challenge... or better yet, CHALLENGED PART)!

What's wrong with this brand-new just-out-of-the-box set of breaker points?

(SORRY for the poor quality cellphone picture!)

Nothing wrong with the part but it might be wrong for your distributor. the end of the spring will hook on another piece and then you adjust it with the oblong hole. If its not like the old set then take the old set with you. There are a lot of tractors that show multiple sets that look like that and the "complete" sets that are like the automotive types.

contact points need to be able to CONTACT each other- not be separated by the frame. Curvy thing on the left needs to be flipped over- assembled wrong.

Gordo...

Did you see my disclaimer "(SORRY for the poor quality CELLPHONE picture!)"?

The shadow is of the conductive copper strip NOT of the spring 'cause it ain't there!

A couple guys caught the fact the steel spring is MISSING... just the copper strip is present.

Good job!

Somebody mentioned the spring could have been separate and packed with the points waiting to be clipped on, and I guess I HAVE seen points made like that. ANYHOW, the next set of points they grabbed off of the shelf had the spring IN PLACE, riveted there.

You'd be surprised how long a couple of competent mechanics at a dealership had futzed around trying to get this thing started before they asked me about it. I'm not claiming to be very smart, just quite a bit older and more familiar with breaker points.

Here's the photo again, followed by a photo of a SIMILAR set of quality Blue Streak points showing the conductive copper strip AND the steel spring.
