ok, I need more help. I am rebuilding hydr, and have lift cover off, and notice a flange??? broken. My tractor is a 63 4000. this flange is on the main shaft.. not the pto shaft. If you were to look into the hydraulic sump, toward the front of the tractor, there is a flange with 4 bolts, that looks like it may retain some sort of bearing. It is where the shaft comes through from the transmisson, but it is in the hydro sump under the lift cover... I cant find the thing in my parts book. Can anyone tell me what the heck it is? thank you.

First, you have probably stated at some point in the past (but I couldn't find it or missed it going back 4 or 5 pages), but I am going to assume you have a manual transmission. I believe what you are seeing is referred to as the output shaft bearing retainer. Should be item #21 on this break down from the NH parts site.

Thanks,,,, but i think its number 5. Item 21 is is in the center of all of these gears correct? What I am seeing is probably the very last thing on the transmission schematic, it has nothing behind it, and whatever is in front of it is in the transmission housing. which is why I cant seem to find it. What is this number 5 called? It looks like the culprit! thank you...

The schematic is a little difficult to follow, but I believe the front of the transmissio is to the left. I actually found a picture of the Outlet shaft bearing retainer in my owners manual and then went to the CNH parts site and got the exploded view. I believe item #5 (gasket) and #6 (bearing retainer) are actally in the middle of the transmission.

at least 5 is the gasket anyway.. but the thing in front of it is the input shaft.. and the thing in front of that is the pilot bearing i believe..

You can see this part while looking in the hyd sump. Correct.

There should be a upper and a lower shaft. The upper shaft hooks to the rear end via a slide on compling.
The lower shaft is the PTO shaft and should have the PTO support on it.

Your picture is of the upper shaft. That piece is called the OUTPUT SHAFT BEARING RETAINER. It is #21 in the N.H. picture.

You will need to find it at a junk yard because it is N.L.A per the N.H. web site. I would call WENGERS to see if they have it.

This picture has it listed as the rear bearing retainer.

oh.. yes, I see your question now. Correct, you see this part bolted to the front of the hyd sump directly where the shaft comes through.

That coupling doesnt slide enough to allow me to replace it without the tractor being split does it>?

The tractor will need to be split between the trans and hyd section to replace this part.

I just replaced the same part on my 851. It is not identical to yours - but it's the same part functionally. I'm curious as to why it broke. In this tractor, I also had to replace the ring and pinion. The pinion was badly chipped up. The broken output shaft bearing carrier and fragged pinion must be connected, but I can't imagine how. There is no evidence the pinion walked around and tweaked the bearing carrier - besides, Ford built everything beefy as heck.
