There is a part that i don't understand.it is approximately 2 inches square,mounted under the dashboard so to speak.I've looked at my manual and it looks like a resistor of some kind.could some one please explain what exactly a resistor does? anyway,the part I'm looking at is under the dash has one connection on top and two below forming what looks like an eqilateral triangle.The two bottom connections have nothing attatched to them.The top connection however has one lead going to the ignition switch,the other lead goes to an ampmeter,which goes to the battery plus +side of the solenoid.my question is this.Could that resistor of somekind go bad.Can the ignition switch be bad if the solenoid keeps clicking? I don't think so.See what I know. Can you install a starter incorrectly?It is a 1949 8n with front mounted distributor and a warm steering wheel thanks to me old lady.

What you're looking at is the terminal block w/ a resistor on it for a frontmount distributor. It's a ballast resistor, meaning that it's resistance increases as it gets hot. Cold, it's .3 ohms & hot, supposedly 1.7 ohms. That lets more current to the coil for starting & then drops the current to about 3 amps when it's running.

I'm gonna guess your tractors not running. Tell us what it's doing rather than asking specific questions about possible bad parts. Tell us symptoms; does the starter turn the engine over, does it have spark, etc, etc. Lots of folks here can help you get it running.

As Bruce said.. we need to know if you have a non oem key switch hooked up, as the 8n had a key/ignition switch, and a thumb switch for the starter.

6v? 12v? front or side mount ignition?.. etc..

Ok.. so you have a toggle switch for the ignition. Do you still have the safety interlocked trany top mounted thumb sized starter switch?

Toggle is a generic term.... it's a manual on and off switch not using a key.

I had asked if you still had the oem thumb switch and if it operated the starter solenoid correctly.

chattering solenoids usually mean weak / bad batteries.. or bad cables or bad connections.. rarely.. the starter itself will be hung in the ring gear.

make a votlage check on the battery while atempting to start.. if it drops past 8v on a 12v system.. or 4.5 on a 6v system.. you gots a problem.
