The 148 in my 310 dozer is very tired. I have a later model 148/3 bolt 12V starter doner engin that I planned on dropping in to it, but after looking at the sn# what would you do? I belive that I can cut off the 3 bolt starter flange on the newer block and bolt my 6V two bolt starter to the bellhousing

I put a different engine in my dc and regret that. Of course that was my dad's so it has a special place. Why not overhaul it? Couldn't you sell the donor engine for enough $ for the parts to do yours?

I don't know anything about those engines. Could it be welded? You know someone with the skill and desire to weld it if that's a posibility. Wet or dry sleeves? Not trying to push one way or the other just offering any help I can.

Loren,

If the cracks are in the deck and not in the

lower bore, repair isn't terrible. Have done the

382 and 403 continental engines. Cross bolt it

to pull it back together and then weld it, deck

it, recut the counterbores . Call if you want

to talk about it.

Btw , I did get the box.

The cracks between the cylinders shouldn't hurt anything as long as they are at the top of the block. The head gasket seals against the sleeves. Of course you may break something trying to replace the sleeves.

The 830 i aquired last fall had cracks in the block, around the head bolts. Took it to a mechien shop and had it re-decked. Almost back together now, with complete overhaul, from crank on up. Still many parts to put back on.I love the look of that little dozer of yours. Would sure come in handie here. Bruce

I did a rebuild on my 310G 148 engine, after looking at different engines I am glad I kept the org. engine. When we measured the wear on the rod bearings, our mic. showed no wear it was amazing. good little machine worth rebuilding

Loren,

We did a similar transplant of a 3 bolt starter block into a 511B. I would think your bell housing is the larger pattern. We simply helicoiled the block to 7/16 NC and drilled the starter bolts to accomodate the bolt size.

If you desire to keep it a 6 V that is another matter entirely. Our 511 was 12 V and the ring gear matched up to the starter without a hitch and due to the nature of the engine mods we were using a Nippon gear reduction starter.

Just to let u know what is possible.
