Although I don't post a lot, I follow this board very closely and enjoy following the goings on of all of the folks in the CASE community. My collection of a single '53DC pales in comparison to many of you on here.
Last Sunday my oldest stepson (19 yrs. old) was involved in a single vehicle accident which has left him paralyzed from the chest down and fighting for his life. Over the last week we have had ups and downs as the doctors have worked to stabilize him. All of his major organs seem to be working properly except his lungs. He is still hooked up to the ventilator as his lungs will not accept and distribute oxygen properly. He can initiate a breath but after that requires the vent to fill the lungs and oxygenate properly. He has developed ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) and is still in critical condition as this can be a life threatening condition.
Once that is stabilized and the vent tube can be removed he will be transferred to a spinal rehab facility in Philadelphia. He will be in rehab for several months before coming home to live with us again and be reliant on us. This is a 19 yr. old who moved out of the house as soon as he graduated high school and wanted nothing to do with his mother or I.
Any thoughts and prayers would be appreciated for him as well as the rest of the family (we have 5 other children). Life has changed for all of us.
Thanks in advance.

Brian

Your Family is in MY PRAYERS ,, MY Son Will broke his neck in June 2003,, some 16 yr old girl was showing him how good of a driver she was !!..3 monthes in hospital 6 weeks in intensive care with a rockin bedto keep circulation working ,,and leg massagers,,his Mom stayed Days and I stayed Nites ,, we itched his nose ,and massagedout muscle cramps ,,, Dr. said Cramps were a good sign ,,watch out for infections of all kinds . Will came out in Wheelchair wearing a Halo screwed into his head,,morphine and other medicine had wrecked his stomach , he was walking within 6 monthes with cane ,he was able to drive a yr later .. he did not trust his legs to do what he wanted them to do ..slowly , each month he got a little better ,and 10 yrs later although noticeably afflicted ,Will has apartment, a Wife , a Child , a Job at a plastics press ,and prides himself in changing his own oil and brake pads ,Will Loves to be productive ,, he tires easily , but has logged some 60 hour weeks at the plant , He cannot throw hay like he used to . so we keep him on the tractor or feedin the elevator , ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING,not just YOUR Son , BUT ,with EVERYONE he Comes in Contact..

Thought and best wishes from West Virginia. Friedrich Nietzche wrote “What does not kill me makes me stronger.” Hopefully, your stepson will be a stronger, wiser man when he fully recovers. It seems to me he has a good example to follow in you.

That's a great story....... thank-you for sharing it. I can not begin to understand or feel what it must be like to have a loved one to go though something like that. sounds like you and your family "got it together" to make it happen!! congrates to you, your son and your family.

I have spent many a year working trauma ICU. This will be challenging for him and the whole family. ARDS is recoverable. any questions kindly feel free to ask away. god bless.

Thanks for sharing that story. We are really trying to keep our heads up and a positive yet realistic note on everything.
Stories like that provide an inspiration for us as we go through the recovery and rehab process.

Thanks Peter,

We have heard the same thing from everyone. It is recoverable, but it will be a long and challenging road. Add to that the fact that he broke his neck at the C6 and is paralyzed from about the mid-chest down. He is currently in a "roto-prone" bed and it has been successful with his ABG numbers coming up significantly. He will be going to McGee rehab facility in Philly as soon as his lungs are functioning well. I appreciate the thoughts and offer of questions.

Brian,

My heart goes out to you and your family in this trying situation. Hopefully your stepson will recover and thrive again and your family can heal as well. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Don
