Pertronix Electronic ignition

I just put Pertronix in my Farmall H. Is there anything I need to know about them. Somebody told me I should have the motor rolling over before I pull the switch out to start it or I will burn the pertronix up. Is this true.

Not true!...however you do not want to leave the ignition switch on for too long without starting the engine as it's not only hard on the Pertronix module but also hard on the coil. I accidently burned up a coil this way, but thankfully the Pertronix module was not damaged. Kip

What Kip said is right on, and make sure you open your plug gap up to about .045" to take full advantage of it. After you have ran it for a while pull your plugs and you should see a nice cocoa brown burn on them if everything is tuned properly.

ive had a petronix electronic ignition in my farmall 400 for like 7 years now and have never had any problems with it what so ever and you dont need to turn it over and then pull the switch because like kip-utah said it hard on the coil..

please explain how a gap of .045 takes full advantage of a Petronix unit, though the matching Flamethrower coil is of higher voltage and is more suited to a wider gap the electronic pickup by itself has no effect on spark intensity, it is simply a switching device

rolling the motor before energizing the ignition will not cause any harm to the ignition . You will also find that doing it this way is a lot easier on the starter . leaving the switch on for long periods of time is even hard on points to but the time it takes to get the starter to full rpm before the ignition switch is turned on doesn't hurt a thing it may help in the case of the starter .

make sure it is out of gear before you pull the switch. they will fire if it is in the perfect place when you pull the switch. happened on my old tractor farmall m.

I can vouch for what you say, while not a Pertronics unit, a CDI box I used back in the day would fire up the engine without the starter engaged. Best not to start engines from the ground where you have no control.

Where you at chattsworth when i done that and like to have tool out the port a johns. Happens more frequently when oxygenated fuel is present
