G'afternoon........
Picked up a pertronix unit for a 730 JD. 12V neg. No instructions with it at all. I assume I need to hook the red wire to the positive post of the coil and the black to the negative post on the coil.. Is this correct.

Thanks in advance
Dave

Is your tractor currently wired - or + chassis? Hook the Pertronix up with the wrong polarity, the smoke will leak out and it won't work.
What is the part number on the Pertronix?

I have rewired to 12V neg ground. Item I have is a&i ignition conversion kit. For JD's w/12v neg ground systems only. I understand polarity. My question was "does the red wire go to + side of coil and black wire to - side of coil. Having never put one on before, and no instructions with the unit, I wanted to wire it right the first time. The wire from the ignition switch is now 12v neg ground to the + side of coil. Thanks

Sure looks like it Dave,
line 12 of the installation sheet says to connect the black wire to the coil - terminal.

Line 13 says to connect the red wire to the coil + terminal.
Here is a link to installation instructions, with 12V neg ground being the right side.
12 V neg ground wiring..

Just a note...

(ASSUMING this is an "Ignitor")

If you have a low primary resistance coil, BE SURE to hook the system up like diagram #3, with an appropriate ballast resistor.

If the primary ignition current (engine at rest) goes over about 4 Amps, you'll let the smoke out of the module AND the coil.

They also make an "Ignitor II" (mostly for newer applications) that is able to control primary ignition current to a safe level, allowing the use of "hotter" coils.

Is the coil 1.5 ohm or 3.0 ohm? Is there a ballast resistor system on the tractor
