is it really worth it? i just burnt up my second set on my jd A not sure whats going on i also have a set on a jd 70 no problems with that one all were hooked up the same just wondering if i should just run the points instead

Do you have the proper amount of resistance in the primary coil circut? Pertronix units call for about 4 ohms resistance. Less will definitely destroy them. You can accomplish this two ways. Either use a low resistance coil and use an external ballast resistor, or use a coil that has higher internal resistance. I've done it both ways, and never had any problems. Pertronix actually makes both types of coils, one with 1.7 ohms primary resistance, and one with 4 ohms primary resistance. You can measure the resistance of your current coil by going across the primary terminals with an ohm meter. That should get you started to solving your problem. Hope this helps, Gary

Gary is exactaly right, I burned up two, that we got from Denny's, ordered electronic ign and high output coils from then, The woman that answeres the phone didn't understand and didn't care. Called the guy from Colorado (CBS) he told me what was wrong, and even offered to warrenty, dennys ign. I'm using a stock 6V coil without a resistor, on 12V and CBS ign. works great. We have put them on a ford forklift,WC WD45, 2010, 3010 JD.

have burned up [3] units on 2cyl.JD...talked to a Petronics tech. & he stated that you can't pull a plug wire off without burning up the unit ...you can ground the wire out but not pull it off without grounding because voltage has nowhere to go & fries the unit....this is only for the 2cyl Deeres....I went back to points in my JD's because for the cost of [3] units I can buy a lifetime supply of points...using hot coil you get the same spark just shorter point life & using [2] matched condensors stops that problem...was told that engineers at Petronics are working on this but there is NO warranty on their units....Kent

Kendak, I have had several units replaced by Pertronics free of charge. I suspect that your local dealed is the problem there, the units do have a factory warranty which they have always honored for me when needed. That being said, the man who said that you cannot remove a spark plug wire and allow spark to jump around the coil tower is correct, I ruined one that way. Also the dwell time is what allows the units to heat to much and the resistance must be used to control the amount of current through the switch. there are different hookups for 6 cyl than 4 cyl because of the different dwell time and possibly a 2 cyl would further aggrevate the problem as it switches less than a 4 cyl even. The switch needs off time to cool . Hope this makes sense. Pertronics have been a good unit in my estimation but must be installed and used properly. Also improper jumping could easily destroy the unit. mEl

thanks I agree with everything you stated but the warranty ...I have [3] units on my desk that they will NOT take back because they were installed on JD tractors...I have tried to return them & they will NOT give me a RO # because they were bought for the 2cyl. JD....useless product & very poor PR... IMHO...take care ...Kent

I burn't one up in a Super M and it was a case of to bad ! I looked and looked for the correct dwell setting and still have not found it for a international 4 cylinder.

I have sence went back to points and use them as a trigger for a MSD 6al and blaster coil , with zero problems.

I would reall like to know what the proper dwell is for this tractor.

i should note the 2 i burnt up on my a were from dennys while the one on the 70 came from this site first one i burnt up last about 5 hours 2nd lasted about 2 years

Kendak, It is my position that if the unit was sold with a warranty that does not SPECIFICALLY specify that the units warranty is void if installed on a two cyl tractor that they are obligated to honor their warranty unless they can prove that you somehow vioated their installation instructions or did something to damage it. Are you dealing with a dealer or the company direct? I do not mean at all to be argumentive but If we sell a product at our shop we are the company representative and will honor the warranty and then WE deal with the company and we have not had these issues. And we are a pertronics dealer. mEl

Weve had good success with our pertronix only issue was when we were fixing a leaking head gasket and pulled off wires and somehow bam it fried, but i didn't know you could get the factory to replace cant waite to send in the burnt one. thanks

the units I bought came from this Web site [YT] & I have contacted Petronics several times...they will not stand behind their product if you pull a wire off without grounding it out maybe I didn't make that clear...the best way to tune a carb on a number series JD is to pull one wire & set the carb on the side thats running & then repeat on the other side with it's side of the carb...had Petronics in my puller [WD-45] but had 2 Petronics units quit [one a "M" & the other a WD] at the last pull so I pulled mine & went back to points...do you want the hook up good & then die right before a full pull?...I don't....don't get your BP up if thats what you like run them...it's like riding a bike it's not if you crash it's when cause if you ride you WILL go down.....be cool ..I'll stick with my points that I can fix with the wifes emery board ..LOL...take care ...Kent

On 4 cyl. applications I believe what is required as far as resistance @ the coil is in the range of 2.7-3.3 ohms. I just buy from NAPA the proper 12v coil that internally provides 3.0 ohms of resistance & everything has been peachy on my WD45. 2 cylinders are another kind of animal & I have no experience w/ them. Good Luck!Kip
