PHOTO - Massey Ferguson 35 TVO engine

By the mid 1950's the vapourising oil tractors(TVO was Shell name for their brand of Tractor Vapourising Oil) were being replaced by modern diesel engines which were easy to start and economical to run.
Massey Ferguson had been fitting this 87mm TVO engine into grey Ferguson 20's for years and had stock left. They offered these engines fitted into the new 35 tractor for traditional farmers who still liked TVO engined tractors. Many were sold into the upland small farms.
But within a few years the use of TVO had died out, and supplies were unavailable. So these MF 35's had done very few years work, and were laid up.
Today they are becoming popular with collectors who mix their own version of vapourising oil for shows. The engines are sweet running and with electric starting and a good range of gears are ideal antique tractor show exhibits.
This is a late 1950's 35 which is being restored.

US had some distillate -TVO- option tractors mid to late 50s also. Tax laws weren't quite what England had for road tax on farm fuel- read that diesel was road taxed there even for farm fuel so TVO- untaxed furnace oil based mixs- were cheaper. RN
