pick up truck question

Please help settle somthing between me and my tobacco help. I have a 93 F350 4X4, with a 5 speed trany. While loading tobacco on wagons this truck in 1st gear is too fast. Does it hurt anything letting it idel along in 1st low with out take'n the time to lock the hubs in? I know it is not good to leave the hubs locked in and drive around in 2wd. Thanks in advance.

Lots of folks do that very thing maneuvering their trailers in tight spaces -- usually big campers in campgrounds. Gives them the power to back up over slopes and still turn tight without binding up the transfer case.

Shouldn't be a problem in your scenario.
 
That always has been a problem with Ford trucks. My advice is to switch it off and let it sit there and rust,that should slow it up some.
 
I have a f250 pwr strk w 5 speed 4x4 I tow a large horse trailer total weight about 18,000 and I use 4low Hub in unlock all the time for manuvering. Been doing it for years sure saves the clutch,
 
thats what I was think'n thanks. Guy help'n me said that it was not good to have the transfer case in gear and just back wheels pull'n. While I would not want to go on a road trip like this but we are talk'n bout idel speed, first gear on bare ground. Just got to second guess'n myself. Thanks again.

Sure would take a long time pack'n tobacco too it just sit'n. That would keep some one from get'n run over, and should get done about Thanksgive'n
 
The manuals say not to, but I have done it for years, in many 4X4's, with no problems. I think the reason they say not to, is that the extra torque, all going to the rear end, might cause damage if you really stomped down on it..

Used as you stated, I would not worry about hurting it.. And, heck, it is Your truck.
 
Can put a lot of torque on the rear axles if you stomp the throttle with it like that. Shouldn't hurt anything if you take it a little easy.

I've done it without hurting anything.
 
kyplowboy, I have been doing this since I learned this trick since 1980. Most transfer cases are 1 to 1 ratio on the HI side and 2 to 1 in LOW. So basically the transfer case makes your truck act like it had twice as low gears as it really has, while in LOW!. It will not hurt your truck at all.
A buddy of mine would split shift his truck (5 speed and transfer case) in combination to get 8 speeds out of his when he had a really big gooseneck load of Mama cows on around 20 to 24 K in wt. Oh yes it can be done.
He would load up and get going to 45mph in 5th on the Low side, THEN... Clutch/feather the throttle/Tranny in N/Shove Transfer shifer from Lo to Hi, Shift back into 3, then 4, then 5! and away he would go.
I Do NOT RECOMEND YOU TO DO THIS, I am only relating a first hand account of what a friend of mine does, even to this day.

don't know if I would want to be in the cab or not but would love to see that trick.

kyplowboy, I am here to tell you it is one neat thing to see done, The first time he tried it was on a 87 F-250 SC 4x4, old 6.9, 5 speed with 4;10s. The deal was Fords old transfer case shift pattern it was a block C with a forward motion of the top part of the C pattern. The new style pattern is a straight I pattern, Just shove the shifter from the bottom to the top of the pattern, one straight fluid motion.
Anyway I use to set out and take down electric fence on wheat pasture with my ol 3/4Ton, 4x4, in low lock, hubs in "Free" Then just put the 4 speed in granny low, and step in and out of the pickup, or tie the steering wheel of with a bunge strap and just let the pickup just drive itself along while i worked on the fence. You will get along just fine, you can let a youngun steer for you too. Anyway Hope this helps!

I allways do this when Backing with a load Just be carefull not to use a heavy foot could break an axle . Remember will also put twice as much torque to Drive shaft, rear end,& axles.
