Picked up a side by side

Picked up this Honda side by side yesterday.

It's a Pioneer 1000-5. It has a 6spd auto shift trany that works like many semi tractors with auto shift transmissions.

Sorry about the dust, guess gravel roads when its dusty are not a good thing. Lol. Did find if you go a bit faster, over 20mph, the dust is much less. Just pick drive, reverse, or low range and it does everything for you. You can choose manual and do the shifting yourself if you like.

For 4x4 you can choose 2wd, 2wd with locked differential, 4wd, and 4wd with locked differentials both front and back.
We liked this one because it has seats that fold up in the bed.

That way when grandkids visit we can all go for a ride. When the seats are down the bed is like the others and can tilt to dump.

Has one extra thing, the sides open for access from the sides if you like.

The major reasons we went with the Honda is for the seats and because of Hondas excellent reliability reputation. I will let you know how it works out over time.

Nice. Have fun! I bought a CanAm 700 last year. So far so good. Can do the same with the axles. Lock one or both. Will tell you, on grass with the axles locked it will dig ruts when turning.

Jon, what year is that? I am interested in the Honda Pioneers- no belt-true automatic. I agree with Honda's reliability reputation- we had a 250EX Honda quad, and never had to anything to it in 20 years except a battery. Does your model have fully adjustable suspension? I have Yamaha Wolverine 850 R Spec sxs, and so far, no complaints. But after I bought it, I found they want you service the pulley sheaves every 1500 miles, to keep the 10yr belt warranty, which I think is a ridiculous amount if maintenance. It takes all day to do that. I am also wanting the turf mode that Honda has. Thanks, Mark.

I saw a brand spanking new Gator at JD for 21k. I thought, man I could have my pick of older Cherokees, chop the body into a UTE, and still have lots of beer and pizza monet left over.
Yep. I like the versatility of a light vehicle like a side by side but don't want to drive around in 100 degree heat and blowing dirt during the summer and below zero degrees in the winter without heat and a/c. Most of them I've seen around here right now look like a survivor from the Dust Bowl era and the people inside look the same way. Then need to find a place in the barn to keep it. The 4WD F150 still takes me wherever I want to go. Can roll down the windows for fresh air.

This one does not have the adjustable suspension, this one is the base model. The Forrest model is the first that has adjustable front and rear suspension.

This one will have a cab and heat. Honda does not sell a model with that, but you add what you want to get there. We got the heat, glass windshield with wiper and removable doors. When those item and the rest come in we will take it back and have them installed.

This is a 2024

We have a 2016 Honda 1000-5 and have enjoyed around the property and a few off-road trips. I have a couple of words of caution.

1) Do not creep along or use the throttle to hold it in place on a hill, it is hard on the clutches, and they are expensive to replace.

2) Do not go in water above the floorboards, and when going through water go slow to avoid bringing a wave of water into the engine compartment.

3) Find or make a bed liner if you plan on hauling wood chips or dirt etc, without one the debris falls through the cracks around the seats and fills them up.

I think you will enjoy it and get good service from it.

At the end of 2011 I bought a kaw 4010 just after the 2012 came out. This was the last 2011 at the dealer
I got it for 25% off MSRP. $7500 plus tax. I looked for features like power steering, twin cylinder, fuel injection. 4 wheel drive, locking rear differential. 4 wheel hyd brakes, carry 1000 pounds of cargo and a cubic yard bed, Unlike most people I wanted something safe that only travels 25 mph, a full roll cage and seat belts for the grandkids when they were younger and learning how to drive.
It only has 1000 hours on it and my Boss rides my Mule daily. Also Bust Brown approved

Great advice. I didn't follow any of that when we rented them in Greenville, ME last year. Had an absolute blast on the trail system up there.

Thanks for the info. My Yamaha has fully adjustable suspension-spring preload, shock dampening, and compression. I set everything to the softest setting, and it does ride smooth. That helps my back. Mark.

Good luck with it! Around here, all the Hondo's & Kawi's are the problematic ones. The latter is the worst offender.
