Pie weight on 601

Well I did some more research....this forum has great archives.....TONS of useful info!!

Found some info posted by Tony Jacobs back in August of last year.....turns out there are a number of 'variations' on the pie weights for a 601. Check out that thread ...very helpful!

Sadly, my old faithful 601 seems to be sort of a 'Frankenstein' in that is stamped 641 on the trans, has a 172 CI engine, and has 24" wheels!

I am not sure how to tell if the axle is the row crop type or the more heavy duty industrial type....so any help there would be great.....especially since the 24" weights are the 45# type only.

So.....if anyone out there in the general vicinity of NC has a set of 24" pie weights...or even a partial set......(figure 800# was the recommended weight on a regular axle) please let me know!

NO 6xx series tractors have "row crop" or "industrial type" rear axles. All are the same utility type.

Weights for 24" wheels are the most difficult to find. You may wish to consider converting to the much more common 28" wheels/tires if you plan to add pie weights.

Thanks for the info.
Hmmmm.....converting to 28" might break the budget!
Would need the whole nine yards....centers, rims, tires.....and then weights set!

I might have to be satisfied with the 'big block of concrete' approach to counterweight....but will give it some thought. Could try to sell the 24" set to at least put a dent in the bill. Any takers out there?

Had another thought since the pie weights for a 24" you say are close to impossible to find.
Does anyone here know what OTHER rear wheel weights will work on a Ford 24" wheel???

Now you're thinking out of the box.
Yes they do make a different style of weights for 24" wheels. They make a type that bolts to the center and are stackable. You would most likely find them on industrial models. Probably they would fit from most ind Fords built all the way up through 1985 or maybe beyond.

Frankenford sounds better than Frankenstein and yes I do have
one.1955 850 that has a 1960-1964 134c.i. dropped into it.

You can use threaded rod and wheel wts from most any other brand tractor. Lots of tractor pullers do this.

I've seen where people would line the inside of the wheel with plastic and pour it full of cement using paper towel tubes to keep access to the lug nuts.

Far enough "outside the box"?

Hey....I am right there with you.....I thought of that, but when considering what a bear it would be to handle the wheel to get it mounted.....groan.

I had even considered trying to mould 4 sections of concrete to fit the wheel (with the plastic barrier) with FG reinforced type concrete,wire, and little length of pipe for the bolt holes. You could then bolt on each section.

Would take some doing....but when you compare 800# concrete for about $50 ....to [u:1d355850b8]10X that[/u:1d355850b8] for pie weights....sure is tempting to give it a try!!:wink:
Would only have to lay down one wheel to use as a mould. I suppose you could even make a form of the wheel profile and not even have to take off a wheel.

In fact I have about convinced myself to go this route. If successful....I'll try to post some pics for anyone else in my shoes. 8)

One other question....
I spotted a thread from a while ago that showed a fancy lug nut/stud used to mount wheel weights that a forum member TheOldHokie had made.
I figure if that stud part could be made longer...or for that matter, just a longer lug nut open through and through...it might work real well to bolt on the concrete sections.
Wonder if anyone knows if he is still on here and if he might make such a beast. Or....anyone know the radius for the lugs? I do know the threads are 5/8-18 (at least I believe so).
