Thought I'd better hurry up and get this old rod drug home and tuned up, as the darned wheat is gotta be in the ground before long.

Think I made a lot of Sunday drivers mad out on that hi-way this morning tho. :>)

Ok Allan, what in the state of Nebraska is that darn thing. I can see it fols out for more width, but other than that, is it missing its other parts. Is it some sort of failed no till(literally) peice, that just makes the neighbors THINK you are working them tractors??

This is another one of those dryland implements that have fallen out of favor these days 'cause it doesn't cost enough, it works too darned good and it's just plain way too simple. :>)

It's a rod weeder. This one folds out to a width of 30' then over and back so that the single 1" square rod goes in the ground in a "sideways" fashion.

The tires are chained up to drive and spin the rod backwards to the forward motion of the machine. It runs along right under the surface of the soil about 2" deep and literally "pulls" the weeds out by the roots.

Very close to a 100% kill with this thing without disturbing the soil and/or moisture. I'll take some pictures of it working next September.

Hey now Allan this time I agree 100 percent on what tool to use on that summer fallow. I like a rod befor planting, levels the ground and kind of firms it up for the seed.

Allan, What would the horsepower requirement be for that compared to a V-plow? I used to see rod weeders west of us but my Dad said our soils were too wet and it would create a hardpan.

That backwards rotating rod works just like a knife scaling a fish and doesn't take much power at all; just skims along right under the surface.

Rule is to use it ONCE as the last pass just before planting. Kills all weeds and leaves a nice level bed with available soil moisture still in tact.

Hi Ken,

I had used my neighbor's Morris last year mounted with the spring-shanked duckfeet in addition to the rod.

Absolutely hated that thing. Left the roughest field I've ever been on and I've fought it all year long.

Figured I had better bite the bullet and go buy my own this time around.

Nice Miller rod weeder Allan. Just remember that rule using it last before planting only. Seen too many here trying to use them in spring or middle of summer for getting over ground too fast when too wet with weeds too big or too much trash and then they got a real mess with weeds and blowing ground later having to rip it all up again. Rod weeders been around a long time since 1930s at least when JD made some a old D could pull 2 or 3 of those hooked together.
