Dad and Grandpa had a 2 row IH corn planter. Pulled it with Dads SC Case or Grandpas B JD. Remember them getting off on each end to move the check wire stake over.

When I was a kid, Dad planted corn with a 2-row IH horse planter. (Dad always loved horses and used this team that he had raised from colts well into the mid 1950's. They worked great for hauling manure from the barn during the winter, as they never got stuck in muddy conditions.) He used to get off the planter to move the check wire after he pulled the lever to lift the planter. The horses would turn the planter, line up on the marker & then stop. (After the first round or two, he always tied the reigns to the lift lever on the planter & didn't touch them again until the end of the day.) Dad always had to have a firm hold on the seat of the planter when he snapped the wire into the check mechanism on the planter because the horses were off as soon as they would hear the snap. After the horses died, we still used the planter behind the H Farmall, there was a "kit" he bought that converted a 2-row horse planter to use behind a tractor. The kit even had an extension for the lever so you could reach it from the tractor seat. He eventually went to drilling with a four row because tractor with two row was much slower than the horses were when you always had to get off and move the wire. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Very nice pictures. The guy I worked for as a kid had a planter just like that. He picked a second one up at an auction for $50, and our summer rainy day project one year was to cut it in half, and add the pieces to the first one. Voila - four row corn planter

Nice pictures....First corn planter I ever used was a John Deere 290 pulled by a new Farmall H in 1950. My own first planter was a 490 in 1980 and pulled it with my 1945 Farmall H. In 1984 (my last farming year) I got a nice 494. In conventional tilled soils I always got nice even seed placement and plant emersion with those old John Deere planters. I was patient and only planted at about 4-4 1/2 miles an hour. Half throttle in 4th gear with the H's.

I think you mean "hill dropped" as apposed to check rowed. That is one pretty setup.

I used 40" check wire like I have used for years maybe I don't know the difference
