planting rye grass,need help

I have a 20 acre bermuda field,just got the last cutting off here in North Ga.
The pastures are so dry I would like to try some rye grass for grazing and maybe hay,would rye come up if broadcasted?or have to be drilled?and is it going to damage the bermuda?

I took my second cutting of ryegrass after it had gone to seed this year,because like you,we were dry and it was barely worth cutting.The roots died from it being so dry. The seed fell off on the ground and I thought after a couple of scattered rains it might come up,but didn"t. I hauled a bunch of manure on it,figuring it was a lost cause,then disced the manure and the seed in.Three days later it was up thicker than it was last year. So,I"d say you"ll have to drill it at least to get some dirt over it.

We used to drill using the county no-till until they sold it. Now we broadcast like we did years ago. You get better results with the drill but we have good success with broadcast then drag. We have been using Marshall but are going to also use some Passerel this year to see how it does.

I've broadcast ryegrass an had pretty good luck. The problem with broadcast is if you don't get enough rain to set the roots. If it germinates and doesn't get enough rain to get the roots started it will die. Also ryegrass hates hot weather here in north Arkansas it was 92 to day if it gets that hot you stand a chance of loosing it.
In the spring if you either cut it for hay or mow it before it matures it shouldn't hurt your bermuda. Ryegrass makes pretty good hay. Hope this helps

Did it last year here in north east Texas. Had great results as we had been in drought too. What I did was run a disc over the ground first. I had no angle on the disc so was not cutting much, just made a little slice in the grass. Then I sling out seed on 3pt spreader and ran a heavy wire panel behibd the spreader.
Got rain 2 days latter and had a great stand or rye and clover. Sure did help out as hay was in short supply

I run a disk with notched blades over the bermuda. Set the gangs straight and just run it deep enough to let the notches cut a little hole. will throw some dirt. Then broadcast the rye and drag it. Every hole the notch makes will have rye in it. I mow the bermuda a close as I can get it. I think it even helps the bermuda next year.
