Hello all I was just given a murray riding lawn mower 12hp 38 inch cut industrial/commercial my question is mounted on the front is a plastic box with a hole in the top could someone please tell me what this is for? Thank you. Kevin

Well, it could be the fuel tank, or a place to hide yer silver dollars before the crash that is coming. It could also be used as a muffler, which may be missing the tube that directs the exhaust gasses down toward the ground. Or, it might be a whoa-haww fer a horses neck, but if it ain't any of those, then it must be a conversation piece! Does the tractor run ok? Did you ask the seller what it is or does? (Altho, most sellers are dumber than a box of rocks, so you might never find out what it is for.)
Just drive it, and if the thing falls off, and doesn't affect the running of the machine--then run it!

Nothing"stock" that I can recall on Murrays over the years. What size and color box, type of hole, flimsy or solid,"front"/hood or grille???
Picture?

Upon receiving a Murray tractor, with the 2 cylinder engine, and upon removing the hood, I, too, have found one of those boxes. I have been trying to figger out what it is, but now that somebody has told you and me, what shall we do? I'm not going to worry, as the tranny has gone belly-up, and the engine runs but leaks oil, the mower deck is 42 inches, and it will have to set for a spell, until i can get to the engine, to stop the oil leak
