Plowing Question

Just wondering what tractor HP vs number of plow bottoms you guys use ESP in the 80 hp range. I have a 82 HP turbo diesel JD 2140 cab tractor 2WD and it pulled a 4-16" plow 3 pt hitch 12" deep just fine, was in 4th gear 2400 RPM. I know soil conditions will come into play, this was in good bottom land, i haven't tried it in clay yet, i would say it would still plow good around 8" deep???

Also while plowing the tractor wanted to go to the right, i had to turn the wheels to the left all the way through the field, it was adjusted level, since then i filled the front tires to add weight, maybe the landing was off???

sounds like you have no problem. I would plow no more than 7 inches deep. I pull 4 16" bottoms with 110 HP and have traction problems and I do not complain and neither should you as you are doing just fine in your loose soil.

generally, plow depth is half the width of the cut. ie, a 16" bottom would run 8" deep. the clay will pull a lot harder than the bottom land.

15 to 20 per bottom is a good rule of thumb.

Around these parts, we figure atleast 25 HP per bottom for the moldboard, and on a chisel plow (we rent a disc chisel once in a while) 15 HP per shank.

We've got some pretty heavy red clay. My Oliver 1600 will pull the old 3-16, but it's kinda slow going. All grandpa used though. Now we pull 4-16's with our 1855 (105 on the dyno) and I ussually go in 3rd under/direct. Sometimes I can go in over. Before we had the 18, we pulled a 3-16 with a 1755 and used the same gear.
