AS most of you know I farm organic, I picked up some hay ground 2 years ago and got it certified for next year. I want to put it in soy beans in the spring. I guess what I want to know is how well will chisel plowing work compared to the mold board plow for breaking up this ground this fall so I can get it worked in the spring? I have never used a chisel plow in my life but I bought a good one this summer. From what I understand it takes the place of fall moldboarding in established row crop fields or did I understand this wrong? As always thanks for your input in advance!

A chisel will cover about 1/3 of the residue in one pass, vs nearly total cover by a moldboard plow. Depends some on point size and style. On old established sod you may want to make more than one pass. Here, fall tillage is the norm- clay gets bricky with primary tillage in the spring. But you can replace the points with sweeps for 100% undercutting in a shallow spring pass.

flip it over and be done with it if you can't spray it, roundup in the fall then no-till in spring would be a better option for me.

You cant use any sprays to kill the sod so you best turn it over with a moldboard plow . A chisel plow wont cover your sod to kill it and you will be fighting it next yr. in the beans . It is a good fall tool after rowcrops .

I think I'd want the molboard plow in your case.

If you could spray it, the chisel would do well. Without spray, you might see a lot of clumps in spring that re-establish themselves....

Thanks fellas for your input, thats what I will do is moldboard that rascal. It may be a good time for a plowing bee?

any type of plowing you do will bring up roots and make for a mess to do anythng with. check with checmical dealers and get them to tell you what to spray for a burn down and then just notill your beans.

I used a rototiller this spring for the first time on some old crp ground and it worked well. Was going to use this fall, but we've had so much rain, I doubt that's going to happen. But will use it again in the spring. This is organic ground.
