mil's house has copper drain pipes. well some of them are corroding. been trying to get a plumber out, called three, still waiting. anywho, if i try and sweat in some patch pipes temporary until i can get them replaced, do i need to worry about sewer gas possibly exploding? house is on a septic field. any thoughts? the bad pipes are right near the 3 inch going out thru the basement wall to the septic field.

The good old gray stuff (duct tape) works fine. Used some 5 or 6 years ago for a temp. fix and needless to say is still not fixed today, but is holding fine.

I have had good luck using a hunk of rubber and stainless hose clamps this quick fix will even work under pressure

Yes, cut up an old inner tube, wrap it around the offending area and secure with hose clamps. You could even "wrap" that repair with some roof flashing or even a coffee can and make the repair more or less permanent.

Keep calling around, there is supposed to be a recession and contractors should be lined up to work for money.

If not then rip it out and put in PVC. use a Fernco adapter to link PVC to the copper line.

thanks for the replys, i guess for now i'll just patch it with either the fernco cuffs or maybe some innertube and clamps. still havent got a call back from the plumber, and now i'm waiting for a furnace guy for one of the shop furnaces. 1st guy never called back, 2nd guy said he could stop out tomorrow sometime. sheesh, if i ran my shop that way, i'd of been out of business long ago!!

Your best bet is 1. If you want to wait for a plumber, just wrap a cut up inter tube and use hose clamps as others have mentioned, or 2. Cut out a section of the bad copper piping and use the fernco adpt. and a short piece of PVC. number 2 will be a more permanate repair until you change it all. The problem with applying heat to the copper that is already paper thin, will in turn cause it to disenagrate or fall apart.

Can't believe anyone has questions about plumbing. Been told all my life the only two things a plumber needs to know is; 1. Water runs down hill, 2. Payday is Friday. One caution though. Please wear coveralls..... solves the "pencil holder" problem for the rest of us.

Trick I learned from the old farmer next door. Use electricians tape for your leaky pipes. Lasts for years. Especially drain as there's no pressure involved. Good luck! joe-

Glennster, maybe the plumber and furnace guys have their vans in your competition's body shop and are waiting on them to be fixed. I'd sure go back with PVC and replace. Maybe in the Spring. Home cheapo will have everything you need.
