i have a 52 8n been converted to 12 volt .with 6 volt genny that does not charge . i just keep the battery on trickle . my question is whats the points gap to be set ? i bought a new set . dont have a manuel yet.also there is a ford truck coil on her has the plastic slide that attaches the wires to it .has tack on it is that the positive side or the other i know pos side is to go to dis pos ground thanks

Doggie.......surprizingly enuff, ignition point gap (0.025") is the same, whether 6V or 12V positive or negative ground. Sparkies are also still 0.025". .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Working dog7.First off how can you say that it has been converted to 12 volt if it still has a 6 volt generator?I think your best bet would be to leave it6 volt.Get a new 6 volt battery,6 volt coil IC7SB ($23)from NAPA then get the generator working. Also get you a IT FO4 Ford shop manual.

0.025 same as the plugs. Yep you can run one for many an hour with out a working charging system. I did that on my 841 for at least 5 years till the bearings in the alternator locked up and took the belt out. I then just got a new alternator and belt and it is now charging again

My 6v 640 works fine and the generator charges.I wouldnt want to be a mile back in the woods with a tractor that wouldnt start because I was to lazy to fix a generator.

(quoted from post at 17:41:30 03/28/11) good send me the money to fix it it will be taken care of .
on't mind 'ol 36...he is just doing his best to be his up-beat, cheerful, optimistic, sunny, hopeful, comforting, encouraging, merry, lighthearted, hospitable little 'ol cherub.

you bet, just wondering how so many people who get their hands on a tractor can be so dumb and lack common sense.Daddy must have bought the tractor for them .

no reason to be a moron just asked a simple question . had to put your 1 cent in to it i figure if you kept you mind on your own business you would have plenty to do.

My tractor is used to saw firewood and haul out the sawed wood with a trailer. It brings out logs for my sawmill.I do know the point gap without looking in a manual.Dry sawed firewood brings 100 bucks a trailer load so I keep my tractor in good repair.

Old ,you dissapoint me since you have done tv service.I found many problems in color tv sets and did my best to get them working right.Ive been an auto and tractor mechanic sincw 1954 and was trained to do things right or leave them alone. When I did alternator work a set of bearings cost 3 bucks at most.My tractors and truck are old but are in good repair. What happened to pride in workmanship?

Very simple. The wiring on this tractor was bad and when my dad shorted out the amp gauge it made a totla mess of the wiring and fried the alternator which was a ford with an external V.R. and at the time my dad wanted the tractor so it would run so I left it like it was till the bearings went out of the old ford alternator. When that happened I rewired it and installed a Delco alternator and was done with it. Again you need to walk a mile in the other mans shoes before you jump on them which you seem to like to do. Oh well it may catch up to you are the gates

I am not jumping on any one,Ive been taught to do good work in anything I do.5 years is a long time to ignore a problem. As I said I can get a mile back in the woods on my land with my tractor and that would not be a good place to have my tractor not start because I didnt have a working generator.I have been called a moron for speaking the truth,it may be a good time to quit the forum. Its a time waster anyway and now that the snows gone Ive got work to do on fences. There are some good people on here but there are too many nuts .

Hey I had never had a problem out of this old tractor till the alternator locked up so why fix something that was not causing a problem. Fact is a battery if only used to start a tractor and to run the ignition system will run for weeks if you do not start and stop it real often. Then add a good battery to that mix and I went months with out charging the battery even in the dead of winter. Again it was one of those if it isn't broke and to me it wasn't why fix it and I never had a problem with it till the bearings locked up. Once I did need to fix it I fixed it right and it now has life time warranty alternator on it and a new wiring system. But it sure seemed you dug deep just to attack me again
