Points quality going down hill

I taught my nephew how to put these in yesterday.
When he was done the tractor fired right up and ran great!
For about 90 seconds.
When I took it back apart today, the whole contact was missing
off the moving arm. Now I should pull the distributor and find it.

That is sad! Someday in the future we may all need 12 volt and Pertronix. I have had Pertronix on my 601 for 4 years and no problems.

As soon as I saw the plastic "rubbing block" (vs. phenolic) it was apparent that it was not what we used to consider a "quality" set of points.

I have been using Blue Streak with no issues, yet. I hope that doesn't become the norm from them. And just for the record, Echlin is a member of the Standard Motor Products group, along with Standard's Blue Streak line.

I agree Bob. And these are BlueStreak points from Standard Ignition.
The only points I find recently with a phenolic rubbing block are NOS that a store has on the shelf.

X2 on the Standard Line. I prefer there products on just about anything Domestic that does not get OEM. Less likely to come back under warranty.

i'm getting closer to ordering a 1247 myself. already have the 12 volts :)

Dig a little deeper for the 91247 :D

Those don't look like Blue Streak points. I have a few NOS sets of the Standard Ignition/Blue Streak Points and none have that felt wick in them. Now, here's what we found out back in June, 2019. I spent a week with Farmer Dan and we tested and rebuilt several sets of the Ford Front Mount Distributors. The ECHLIN brand, NAPA p/n CS-35, are now junk -the gap can't be set correctly. We did not see any particular Lot No. or serial number and we both purchased sets from different NAPA outlets 100 miles apart. Echlin still have the phenolic rubbing block. The only other phenolic blocks we found today are the Standard Ignition/Blue Streak, p/n FD-6769-X, available at NAPA and on ebay. The other brand is what is sold at CNH now, p/n 8. Those brands performed flawlessly. We tested the TISCO brand too, though they have the plastic rubbing block appear to be much better than the other cheaper brands and had no issues setting. The TISCO brand also comes with a handy, reusable, .015" feeler gage for setting the point gap with. My last set of TISCO lasted me 6 years and were only changed as I wanted to do a tune-up on my 8N for the Eyes On Design show in 2016 at the Edsel Ford Estate. NOTE: ALL the points we tested were at $16 give or take. If you pay more you are being ripped off. One of the biggest issues on the Ford Front Mount is some do not understand how it functions and how it is set up correctly. First, the unit cannot be set and timed right while on the tractor. It must be removed and rebuilt on your bench. Once it passes, it gets mounted on the engine timing cover ONE WAY and if it gets off 180?, it will break and crack the aluminum base and render it junk. You?ll then need to pull the guts out and replace with a new or good used base. The cam/weights are offset as is the cam shaft on the engine and they must match up. When folks give up in frustration with non-starting issues, they assume the solution is to just switch to 12V or an EI job. Nothing wrong with those but if your distributor is set off, you?ll never get it running and just going to EI may get it running but you?ll never know what you did wrong.

FYI: Use Standard Ignition points or those from CNH. ECHLIN CS-35 are no longer any good quality-wise..

Jim, they are Bluestreak from Standard Ignition.
My local Bumper-to-Bumper auto parts store stocks them, so they
may have been setting on their shelf for quite a while. I'll see what
they have in stock this afternoon when I get there.

The last set of NOS Blue Streak points I have in the drawer for side mount distributor. Got three sets about three years ago on ebay.

The only difference I see between these and the pictures Royce posted is the color of the felt. I have been using Blue Streak points since the late 1960s and all that I have seen that had the felt the felt was red and the rubbing block was blue plastic. As long as they are properly lubricated using Standard Motor Products SL-1 the rubbing block does not wear down.
Just my experience.

I just bought blue streak from NAPA for my 2N. Had to file holes to get screws in. Could only adjust points to >010. Had to bend to get .015 gap.
Also have been burning up 12 volt coils for the 2N from Tractor Supply. The box says "2.8 ohms. No directions included as to need/ no need ballast resistor. Have now
installed coil from steiner. Theirs specifically says "no ballast resistor need and ohms stated as 2.2 ohms with internal resistor". Even my digital multi tester can
not check for internal resistor as they get their resistance when heated up
I have also burn up the spring of the points at the thin bolt point, on my Ford 600, as their was no backer copper strip with the spring, causing all the amps to flow
thru the spring using the 12 volts.
I also previously bought a 12 volt front @N coil from NAPA and had to return it as the flange would not accomodate the gasket, or fit over the distribor.
I feel a person should have some shop grind old points to get rid of bad spots. This would then be better points than any China points.

PS haven't got any where on 600 painting as my wife has "parkinsons plus dementia and now anxiety attacks and calls 911 when I'm asleep.
I'm like my tractors "Getting Run Down"

ok, i dug :)

the only thing i could find about differences between the 2 is that the 91247 offers improved performance at higher RPMs, which i can't see being an issue here, as i figure the governor on these engines never allows the RPMs to get into that range. what else am i missing?

"what else am i missing? "

It's a pertronix II, so it will "live" with a low primary resistance coil, and it shuts off primary current when engine rotation stops, GOOD for "BLEMS" who can't remember to turn off the ignition switch if the engine stalls.

But the $$$$ is NUTZ!

And it will also survive a reverse polarity event for those of us suffering from senior moments. Costs about the same as my monthly cell phone bill which is also nutz. My calculation is it pays for itself the first time I forget and leave the switch on which I WILL do in very short order....

Royce, it has to be that Modern Renewable ENERGY that causes all the grief..... Bring Back THROWAWAY Power!!! :-)

thanks, guys. speaking of senior moments... now that u mention it, i had heard about the frying the unit thing - and had forgotten it

Here they are Jim. The package has gone back to the old blue
color but the points look the same other than the wiper being
a tad shorter on the set I bought today. Price dropped too. $13.99
