Points questions

Hello;

Where can i buy a decent set of points for my Allis that are actually made in U.S.A. ?
I only can get these cheap china crap and they are not good enough to be worthless, let alone making them actually work.

Try BlueStreak from Standard.
You might also get good results from Echlin via NAPA.
Your mileage may vary.
If you go with BlueStreak, be prepared for sticker shock.

Buy a pertronix unit, and never worry about points again! Same labor, to install, just never have to do it again.

I agree with Royse. Go BlueStreak for reliability. I prefer points to electronics for ease in troubleshooting plus I like to keep old iron original.
BlueStreak points and condenser run about $22 and the Pertronics about $90.

I'm not sticking up for the made in China stuff, but I've got that same Delco distributor as the Allis uses on a couple of my Farmalls, and I have no trouble at all with the ignition components from either Tisco or A&I.

Maybe your distributor needs to be rebuilt, or maybe you are using the wrong coil?

I buy them at O'Reilly's auto and they are B/W which seems to be a good brand since I can not remember when I last replaced a set of points in any of my machines

never worry again.. till it goes up in smoke! seen it happen. takes about 1 second when someone installs the bat backwards.. or jumps it off wrong.

I just picked up 2 sets of Standard Blue Streak for the same price: $15 for the points and $7 for the condenser as the cheap set of Chinese points didn"t last more than a few hours of running and then needed to be filed each time before the tractor would run. Mike

B/W part number at O'Reilly's is A40V and that set of points fits many of the older A/C tractors like the B, C, WC, WD and WD45 as long as they have distributors

So what, you can fry points by leaving the key on. I just said what worked for me!

and I can fix them fried points 9 times out of 10 with an emory board, sheet of paper or fine sand paper. not so with the EI.

just saying what I observed. EI is nice when it works. when it decides to not work.. you are up the creek till you swap breaker plates back to points or get a new module.

not poo-poo'ing them.. just stating their realistic downside that many gloss over...

like i said. when they work.. they work 100%.. it's when you hit a snag that you fall into the water. I watched 2 guys working on a tractor.. one hooked up a jumer bat wrong to a machine with a dead bat.. it fried not oly his points but his alt too. other guy said 'gee.. that's suposed to be a positive ground machine though!! 180$ later the tractor ran again..

i have ei on some machines. again.. runs good. I frequetly have hand cranked that machine.. I think it's safer to hand crank with ei vs points due to better starts and less kick backs.

just pointing out the 'dark side' that many don't know about...

soundguy....just curious, better starts is debatable. But explain to me how EI reduces kick backs. The only way I think there could be a change is if the EI is timed differently then the new points are, which they shouldn't be.

I'm not sure of the part number with a distributor, but my local parts store could look it up if I knew what distributor you had. Delco?
I can call them and ask if you want me to.

remember if you connect the tractor up negative ground, you should reverse the wires on the coil to match. If not, the voltage goes the wrong way across the point and can lead to shorter life.

also if you switch to 12 volts and use the 6 volt coil you can overpower the point and make it burn the tips.
