polarize generator

rustd

i just got my first tractor and i need help. its a 49 8N ford. i just put in a new 8 volt battery but dont know with pole to jump to polarize. my voltage regulator has two poles on top,one on right side, and one on bottom(looking at it toward the seat)the top one on the left is field one on right is arm(i think). what is the one on the right side, and the bottom?what two do i touch?

Go out and get a 6 volt battery.Put it in positive ground.Forget the polarize bit.Polarizing is what you do when putting in new field coils.A battery is connected to and a compass is brought near the field coils. One coil should oppose, the other should attract the North end of the needle. You will cook your regulator playing with 8 volts. The coil will be next. When the generator starts charging the shunt coil will pull the cut out contacts closed and the battery will load the generator.

rustd........as a general rule, we discourage 8-volt batterys on 8N's 'cuz the genny can't output 9.4-volts that takes to charge 8-volt battery. While some claim you can adjust the charge relay to weakly charge the 8-volt battery. Most of the time you go around with semi-discharged 8-volt battery.

Iff'n you think you need more volts to turn yer engine, 12-volt conversion with 3-wire Delco 10SI alternator and built-in voltage regulator is recommended.

Howsomevers; you polarize the 8N-squarecan voltage regulator by "arc-sparking" the ARM and BAT connections together on the regulator. They are usually side-by-side. HEAVY WIRE. Field wire is skinny wire. Ground wire is skinny black wire. Most 8N voltage regulators have 3-terminals in a row, and the groundwire is held by the squarecan mounting screw. .......Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons

BAT to ARM

Rstd:

I agree with the earlier posters. 8 volt batteries are not recommended as your gererator/regulator will not maintain a proper charge in the battery unless you are one of the few still with us who knows the largly lost art of VR adjustment.

" Polarizing is what you do when putting in new field coils."

And when you forget & hook the battery up backwards & reverse the polarity. Or when you drop the generator. Or if you follow the directions on the old v/r's & manuals.

The current flow reverses when when the engine shuts down.It would appear that that polarity reverses constantly. Why do the contact points open in the cut out?Ive put new batteries in my john deere with out polarizing for 40 years.I just wave my magic wand and say polarize 3 times.you must be facing north for it to work.I face south when I put a new battery in my neg ground truck last year.

"The current flow reverses when when the engine shuts down."
"It would APPEAR that that polarity reverses constantly."

Don't be mislead by 'appearances...it could lead you to a 'bogus' conclusion.
The current reverses at shut down, BUT polarity does not reverse.

(quoted from post at 20:54:27 08/12/09) No, you're mistaken. Polarity does not reverse when the engine cuts off.

He said you have to have a "magic wand", and I think mine has seen it's better days.....

(quoted from post at 20:01:36 08/12/09)
Dunk, from time-to-time you gotta "polarize" your magic wand to keep it puttin out.
eah, Dunk, positive battery cable to those two ground thingies and the neg cable to the wand!

(quoted from post at 06:45:10 08/13/09) Current flow has to reverse for the points to drop out.Watch your ammeter when the engine is winding down.
Everybody here is in agreement with current flow reversal. It is your contention that, "It would APPEAR that that polarity reverses constantly", that NO one agrees with you on.

Witness: "Don't be mislead by 'appearances...it could lead you to a 'bogus' conclusion.

Witness: "No, you're mistaken. Polarity does not reverse when the engine cuts off."

Witness: "He said you have to have a "magic wand", and ..."

You say, 'watch ammeter when you shut down'.

I say, put a voltmeter on the gen armature terminal and observe that the voltage polarity does NOT reverse at shutdown.
