Pond not freezing

My kids wanted to go skating on the pond in the pasture and they came back home and said the ice was thin. I went down there and sure enough it was about an inch. There was also a spot on one side where the cows had broke some ice. I talked to a neighbor and he said he lost one cow in his. The lakes up here [North east MN.] have several inches on them but this is the first that the ponds have not froze more than the lakes.

Yeah, take some from me too!! Just got done spending about 2 hrs. plowing 15" of the darn stuff. Old JD A isn't the best machine to move snow, but it sure beats a shovel.

Yeah, ground isn't frozen yet on the Indiana Michigan border. Just buried a collie Saturday, was crust for about an inch. After that, wet and heavy but nowhere frozen, thankfully. Got about a foot of snow that started as was filling the hole. Today the tractor tires tore the ground up pretty good when slid into the grassy areas. Not froze yet, and I don't mind. Means the ground is absorbing the rain or snow moisture, instead to running off.

If your kids are gonna be skating on the pond, make sure you have some flotation devices handy in case of thin ice. You should be checking the ice thickness before they go out there also.
