Pop River tools all junk?????????

In the last couple days I have destroyed not one but 2 of these things. First one lasted maybe 7 rivets and the 2nd one not even 2 rivets. Found one of my old old ones but it does not work well but then maybe that is because it has been laying around for a decade or more. So any body had any good luck out of these pieces of junk??

have two pair use daily for years and still use them today just not as much as i do not do grain bin construction like i did for while. but yea there still good ones out ther you just might have to pay for them thou. i have always been under the theory you get what you pay for most of the time.

I'v had mine for 15 or 20 years don't use it a lot anymore but still works good as new, it was top of the line when I bought it and I alway hang it up when I'm done with it.

The newer ones the jaws that grab the rivet studs just seem to loose their teeth.Found out the Sears ones are notorious for that.We have one hand rivet tool, been working fine for quite a few years, but we found out there is an easier one to use( link below) air riveter.Granted you can't get into very tight spaces, but 90% of the time it gets it done quickly,no painful hands after squeezing a few dozen rivets. They also have a heavy duty straight riveter that you can use two hands for squeezing, never tried it after the air tool, but seems like it should work good. heres the link address to that one.

Hope this helps.

I"ve had a Marson for over 25 years. Doesnt get used every day but it has popped a couple buckets full I"d bet. I think they are around $20.

I bought a cheap harbor freight rivot gun years ago and have used it a lot. It works fine except I have trouble getting the pin out after I use it.

The ones I've commonly seen at work (aerospace manufacturer) are Cherry tools. Here's a link to Aircraft Spruce & Specialty catalog page for a similar tool. They're kinda pricey, but they're probably the best pop rivet tools out there.

And no, pop rivets are not often used on airplanes, but they are pretty common in mockup shops and for ground support equipment.
Good pop rivet tools

Grainger sells that one.I have one that is over 40 years old, still works fine.It was made by United Shoe Machinery Co of Medway MA.Only uses 1/8 rivets but its still in daily use in my shop.I bought the Marson from Grainger so I could use the larger rivets.I have an import that has a head you can turn to get into deep places.Works fine.

You have been buying stuff from harbor fright again. If you has asked before buying I would have said buy a Marson from WW Grainger. It may have the Dayton name on it.I use a 1/8 pop rivet tool that is over 40 years old still used daily in the shop.Pulling 3/16 steel rivets will test your hand strength.

Is it made in China?? Got one I have owned for over 30 years. Made in USA! I have used many times--but I don't buy Chinese Tools.
I had rather have a worn out American tool then a new Chinese!

Harbor freight ya right buy something from them and wait 4 months to get it no way I do not buy from them and have not done so in a decade or more.
As for where I got the tool well first off I did not buy it but the guy I am doing the job for is and he is getting them at an O'Reilly's so who knows how good or bad it may be. But at least it has a life time warranty on it so easy to take back when I break them

I have one that looks a lot like that one but is does not work well any more but maybe I just need to take it apart and clean and lube it. It has been sitting in my shop on the bench for at least a decade and has not been used in that many years. Pulled it out yesterday after I broke the 2nd one just to see if it still worked

I'm on my second one from NAPA that came in my tool set. I'd still have the first one if I hadn't left it lay on the dozer track...
No problem with either one.
I can get the ULT number off it if you want.

Like everything else it seems they have been copied. I have seen them at HF I do belive. Last I knew you could get the real deal for about $20. When I think of it, which isnt often I give the innards a shot of WD-40 or other thin oil.

What is real bad is that back in the late 80s early 90s I worked at tracker marine and I fixed the small hand tools and one of the tools was a pop rivet gun so yep know how they work. Sort of wish I had put one of them in my back pocket before I left them to go on to green pastures but hey it would not fit in a pocket it was air powered but worked well wish I had one about now.
The one I need to clean up says Kwik on it so yep most likely a copy

I have had mine for 10 years now and haven't had any problems. I have used it on thousands of rivets. Got it and home depot. Think its a arrow brand. Has bright orange rubber grips.

When I was doing my sheet metal workers apprenticeship there was only one manufacturer that we knew of and it was United Shoe Machinery Company. The idea came from eyelets used in shoes. During my last year of apprenticeship I found one ar Sears made from pressed sheet steel. It was junk. This tool was not a required item and was supplied by the contractor but every union worker had one in his toolbox. Now as a retiree I have a Marson and it is better than the old USMC ones. Do not oil it!

I picked one of those up at Ace Hdwe awhile back.what a pc of junk. Popped about 50 3/16" Rivets with it and it quit grabbing the rivet stem and if you did get the rivet to pop it would not expell the spent rivet stem. I bought a couple of contractor grade tools at ABC Supply in Phoenix [Az.] They work good enough.ABC sells siding and soffet materials and pop rivets are used a lot in soffet work,at least how I do it they are.

That Marson works good...also, the big straight lever (in-line looking) one sold by HF works good too. We use a LOT of large head 1/4" aluminum pop rivits on stock cars, and the biggest problem we have it the rivit leaving a "tail"- a stub sticking up. usually a sign of a cheapo rivit rather than the gun though.
That Marson may take a few pumps, but can get into some tight spaces. The big HF is a one pull deal, if you have the room.

Ya I just broke the 3rd one yesterday and going to get the guy to spend a bit more and get the $30 one instead of the $10 one and maybe I will be able to finish the job with out the new one breaking on me
