Popping exhaust

My TO-30 was running rough and you could hear a popping noise and sligh miss from the exhaust
did a tune up Plugs, wires , cap , rotor and points and condenser
still not right would all you Ferguson experts
think its timing or fuel problem

If you can run a compression test it would give you a good baseline of the condition of your engine. I have experienced this same problem a couple of times on other engines and found low compression. When you do the test, crank it "dry" and read all cylinders. Test it again "wet" by adding a little oil to each cylinder. All cylinders should be CLOSE in PSI on each test. If you should have a cylinder very low in PSI the problem could be; after the "wet" test if you get a significant increase in PSI the problem is probably with the rings. If there is no noticable increase in PSI the problem could be valves, head gasket or even the head. Should you experience two "paired" cylinders equally low, the head gasket could be blown between the cylinders. Hope for the best.

Your ditributor bushings could be worn causing a wobble in the distributor shaft.
Rotate the engine til the points close. Push on the distributor shaft radially( from the side) in several different directions and watch the points. they should not move. If you see motion at the points then the bushing and/or the shaft are worn.

Check you plug leads are on correctly,1,3,4,2.My F40 was popping after a show and someone had swapped the 3rd and 4th leads.

Had a similar problem with one of my Farmalls. A valve had stuck just for a moment but it was long enough for a push rod to come off. After loosening up the valve and putting the push rod back on, the engine has run fine since. Just something to think about. Good luck and let us know what you find, Allan.

Possibly neither, turn the engine over using a starting handle and see if all 4 cylinders have equal (or near enough) compressions, they should feel quite "springy" to turn. If they are OK make sure you have the correct plugs set to correct gap and that the points are too, not just near enough as they don't like that. If the valve gear is rattling, check the lash on the valves, again make sure they are set correctly, you may have one too tight or too slack, this may only show up at low engine speeds. If the Carb is set too weak or even slightly too weak it could also cause this. If the Ignition timing is advanced a little too much you could get the same problem. If you need any setting info for any of this, just email me and I will send [email protected]
