Post on coil

Looking at my 6 V coil which is the pos or neg post the one post has BAT next to it
Help

I would think BATT goes to key switch then key gets power from - on battery.

If the machine's electrical system is (+) ground, the wire from the ignition switch goes to the (-) post on the coil.

If the machine's electrical system is (-) ground, the wire from the ignition switch goes to the (+) post on the coil.

That is the problem there is no + or - 0n the posts only on the one is stamped BAT
I am trying to install a Electronic Ignition
and the instruction say to hook the black and white wire to the - post and then to conect the other wire to the pos post , for some reason the coil is not marked other then BAT on the one post .

You should be careful when wiring electronic ignitions or you will damage it. If you are fitting it on a Ferguson it will probably be a positive ground tractor, so the BAT is connected to the Negative side of the battery..But this can be different as you don't say what voltage your tractor is or how the battery is connected. Ferguson Detroit changed to negative ground in 1955 / Ferguson UK changed in [email protected]

Since you don't know the history of the coil and what polarity it was really intended for, you might want to play it safe and just order a new coil that is marked with polarity.

If you reverse the low tension ignition coil connections it will reverse the polarity. It takes 40 % or so more voltage to fire the spark plugs on a ignition system with positive polarity high voltage (this is from the NGK plug literature with reference to DIS ignitions where one plug gets + and one - polarity...) and you'll get more erosion on the plug ground electrode with positive HV polarity since it is not make from as tough a metal as the center conductor.

Is this a new coil or the one off the tractor. If it is off the tractor then is is opposite to the ground at your battery.If new I would return it.
