potatoes in freezer

I read here a few weeks ago about putting a freezer underground and keeping potatoes all year around and keeping small ones for reseeding the following year. How is this done? Do you set the freezer on blocks or what? How deep do you bury it? I am new at gardening and am interested in trying this. Any info would be helpful. Thanks

My friend just dug a hole with his front end loader, burried the old chest type freezer so the lid was about a foot below groung level. then covered it with straw/hay bales. When he needed potatoes, lift the bales out and raise the lid. (not too often). I Guess a stand-up freezer or regulat refrigerator would work if you burried it on its back. the idea is an insulated box that stays constant temperture and moisture.

If you have a basement that stays dry and cool in the winter you'll get the same results. Keep the 'taters in some baskets and cover with burlap or whatever to keep the light out. Manage to keep mine from harvest (oct) thru following spring. Eat em all winter and replant whats left and plantable in the spring.

I tried doing that, but the darn gophers kept chewing through the power cord and shorting out the motor!
