Powder Coater

Anybody out there fimilar with powder coating? My 84 year-old mother-in-law was watching someone do some powder coating a few days ago and now she says her chest hurts a little when taking a deep breath. What is the powder coating material and would breathing some of it be harmful? She is a smoker and has for a long, long time.

Your mother in law smokes ciggys, is 84, AND hangs out at the powder coater.Im kinda impressed.

If she has smoked the majority of her life I would say the powder coating should be the least of her worries.

Powder coat is based on polyester resins that gel at elevated temperatures and coat the substrate (part). It's obvious that breathing the particles would be bad to the extent of how much of the cloud was inhaled.

I would look into the MSDS of whatever the powder was for the specifics on hazards. The powder coater should have that information from the manufacturer of that material. The formulations vary quite a bit based on the part's end usage.

Powder spray methods suspend powder coating materials in the coating area. Some particles may be small enough to qualify as respirable particulates capable of penetrating lung tissue. Ventilation and exhaust systems must operate properly to ensure the particles are removed from the coating area. Also, powder coating materials in exhaust systems may accumulate above limits for particulate matter. Watch her for pneumonia symptoms as the body tries to eradicate the particulate matter.
