Power shift question

Did Deere ever build about a 60 or 70 hp 2WD tractor with powershift? How well did they hold up compared to a conventional transmission?

3020 is your best bet for your power range. they stuffed powershifts into tractors as big as a 4620, then they revamped it in 73 for the 30 series. but they hold up good as far as i know, untill you get heavy pulling in hot weather then they heat up. other than that, work good. i prefer a syncro range gear transmission that i know cant slip, and is less prone to overheating.

May I ask how the 8 speed Powershift was revamped from a 20 series to a 40 series???????? 4840 @ 180 pto hp had an 8 speed powershift.

If they heat up you had a problem cooler plugged with dirt or a leaking seal somewhere. They don"t just heat up .

sorry not revamped, but totally redone. theyre 16 speed over the 8 speed, and they have this little spring loaded clutch in the flywheel housing that acts like a shock damper. its supposed to slip a tad when you bang it into another gear. theyre a good idea on paper, but after a bunch of hours and heat cycles, the springs weaken and they get some unwanted slip in them too.

thats what we thought too. but the 4620 we had, when pulling hard on a 35*C day, itll make the temp gauge walk over to the red zone on a long uphill pull. figured the core was clogged as you said, had it cleaned right out, changed both filters, and still warmed up. had deere check it for internal slippage, and absolutely none, so i guess they just couldnt cram a large enough cooler in between the rad and the fuel tank on that tractor.

Kinda thought so. Being a Massey person I am somewhat stumped by the Deere model numbers.

I use a MF175 diesel to pull a 336 baler with an ejector and a kicker wagon behind that. Works fine, but it would be nice to be able to easily shift on the go when the windrows change size, etc.

As far as I know Deere is the only one that has been building tractors in that hp size with powershifts. And my first guess was a 3020 diesel wide front, but it's good to ask.

2520 was available with Powershift. Rated at 62 horse but many of the diesels tested near 70 on the dyno.

40series had 8 speed powershift 50series had 15 speed didn't that basicly consist of a 2 speed in front of the 8 speed powershift transmission?

the new powershift was totally new. the quad range was just a 2 speed planetary in front of a syncro range transmission making it have 16 speeds.

The powershift in these tractors was not totally new It was the same principal as the 8 speed . They added the 2speed in front and turned it into a 15 speed. The reason it is 15 and not 16 is they would have had 2 gears the same speed. They added an accumulator to cushion shifts also where the 20 series used an inching pedal that could be used to cushion shifts if needed.

Getting off subject....the 15 speed power shift is a lot nicer than the 8 speeds. The nitrogen and spring accumulators helped a lot. C1 and C2 are easier to service and the PTO clutch was much improved. C3 and brakes still require the cab to be pulled.....We had a 4440 ps turned up to around 275, the single plate clutch was the limiting factor on that tractor.
