Power Steering Pump Specs?

I know of guys who have used automobile power steering pumps for other applications. How many gallons per minute and pounds per square inch do these pumps typically run at?

Typical Saginaw power steering pump in a GM car or truck is 1.3 GPM at 500 RPM, and 3.1 GPM at 1500 RPM. Hydraulic relief valve set at 1200 - 1300 PSI.

Some of the pumps on the bigger trucks and older school buses put out around 2000psi, don't know what gpm they had but I do know they work ok for things like lifts for sickle mowers and low power 3 points BTDT

They dont have much fluid capacity.You will have to add a tank.

Doesn't a stock PS pump have a flow limiter valve in it so the PS doesn't become over re-active at high rpms?
Might be able to coax a few more gpm if the internals were re-worked.

The pressure relief setting varies. My '06 Corolla is 1300 PSI. My '88 Ford F150 is 1500 PSI. The GPM also varies and is usually determined by the priority flow divider. The specs can be obtained for you by the dealer service department if they will take the bother to help you. I have used power steering pumps for other purposes by opening things up to find and disarm the flow divider and pressure relief valve which are often combined into one unit. I once unintentionally found out an early '50's Buick pump was cabable of over 3500 PSI. It would probably have a short life expectancy at that pressure.
