power steering

posting for the neighbor. has no computer. he has a 1966 hydro 100. the unit under the steering wheel blew out the seals. is this unit rebuildable, if so how much trouble or should we look for a new one or rebuilt one. thanks in advance for any help.

Chances are it just needs a new 0-ring in there. Mine on my 666 has done that twice over the years. I just take the lines off put in a new 0-ring and back to work. No big deal. That is called the hand pump, and allows for steering when the engine isn't running and controls the steering unit. Don't junk it yet. Not much wrong with it. IT manual has a complete break down of the hand pump in it. I would start where the lines attach to the hand pump, that is likely to culprit.

Thanks George. the oil is coming out around the steering shaft. We can't get to it yet the tractor has a cab on it preventing the removal of the hoods.next thing is remove cab but the owner wants to cut the hood instead and it's his tractor.

Butch,

Don't think ya have to go thru all that.

Pull the wheel and the snap ring. That spool should lift right up out of the orbit motor.

Replace the seals and drop 'er back down in the hole.

we did that and it still pours oil out. I guess we need to dig futher into it. There must be more o rings or seals inside.

Butch, the cab can be raised up enough to service the hand pump without cutting anything. It will raise enough to completely remove the hand pump.

Allan is right on the money on this repair. You need the correct seal kit. The top seal is only a dust seal.

It is easiest to do the job without removing it from the tractor. Once you get the snap ring out you can turn the shaft and oil pressure should push the seals out.
