power sterring

I was wondering if anybody has installed power sterring on a tractor that didn"t come with it? Is it worth doing, or is there too much cost and work involved? I have a "54 Case VA that I just finished installing a loader on the front. Bought a used loader for a good price and made all my own brackets. Would appreciate some feed back, Thanks

Aftermarket, add-on power steering is not as good as the full hydraulic steering that is standard on newer tractors, but it is a whole bunch better than having none at all. Is it worth it? That depends on how much you want to spend. Finding what you need used is the least expensive way to go, but the used stuff might need some work to make it dependable. I don't think there is such a thing as a brand new kit, but you can mix and match brand new components and build your own kit, which could get a bit pricey.

Does your VA have the 'chicken roost' steering arm? Years ago I heard of people using the power steering off a Rambler car on SC's and DC's. Ramblers had a power assist cylinder that clamped onto the tie rod and had the valving incorporated into it. They would clamp one end of the cylinder to the 'chicken roost' and the other end to the frame somewhere. The hoses came from a fan belt driven PS pump. Never did hear how well it worked. The chances of finding an old Rambler are pretty tough, let alone one with power steering. Maybe there's something else out there with a similar setup. Maybe an old forklift? Jim

Check out Jackson Power Steering.
He has new aftermarket units. I installed one on a International 350U. Worked great.

I bought a Allis C at a sale a few years ago for parents to use to mow yard and some on had put a chevrolet power steering sector and pump on it works great

I put one on a JD 60 that Dad used to rake hay. He was in his 70s and needed it. Yes,it was worth it and not bad to install. Bought a used Char-Lynn I believe it was. I just cut the main hydraulic pressure line on the tractor,put pipe fittings on each end after I cut a piece out. Ran a hose to the steering unit and back into the steel line from the return on the PS unit. Worked better that the original on the 730 Diesel hands down going away.

The 730's power steering obviously needed either being properly calibrated or overhauled. No suprise after 47 plus years. What oil is in the system?
How much end play one the top shaft, how close is the sector & pinion gear running and what was the system's neutral point pressure?

Don't know,that 730s been long gone for over 25 years.
