Powr-trol question

I have a 45 A that the previous owner had ran two pipe thread elbows with the newer pioneer fittings on them. These come out of the side of the Powr-Trol unit. Right side. My question is do I have to do anything with the plugs in the back in order to use and keep the Pioneer fittings? The rock shafts move up and down right now with the PTO engaged and the hand clutch engaged. I have a transport disc and would like to be able to keep the Pioneer fitting and use that tractor on the disc. I hooked the hydrolic lines up and the disc would not move up or down. I tried several times to make sure the air was bled out.

No you don't have to do anything. Use as is. The pioneer fittings are used as a replacement to the old p/t fittings. You will have to change the hydraulic hose end to Pioneer if you haven't done already.

I thought the original cylinder hoses went in where the plugs are. Mine come out the side. I will have to hook it up again and check the proper fluid level, make sure it's good. I tried it though and it didn't act like it wanted to lift it.

Yes you ere correct. The original hoses did go in where the plugs are. But, you have to have the hydraulic ends made for a cylinder. Those plugs are just that. PLUGS. You might have to check your book to make sure you don't have to adjust the p/t for the Pioneer fittings. There is two long caps about one inch long on the front of the p/t housing. May have to remove those caps and screw the valves in or out. I don't have my book with me right now to tell you.

Been a while (15 years or so) since I last tinkered with those pipe thread ports in the side but seems to me if using those you'll only have single acting remote operation unless you have the "special" plug with the cap and internal valve. See if maybe the previous owner didn't have one of those "special" ones in it! It should have a removeable cap that hides a valve inside. I'm not 100% on this but I think it needs to be in the bottom port and closed to make the side plug holes work.

If you have more suggestions, or pictures. That would be very helpful, I have a plug that is really short(almost looks modified, or broken), but it looks like maybe it goes to the top on, but I'm not sure. If it helps you could email me directly @[email protected]. I'm finding that a lot of the little "tinkering" type things are going away with the older gentlemen. The younger crowd always wants the easier way out, and would rather by a new more reliable tractor. But I'm going to get all the little bugs out of this thing and have a blast hobby farming with it. Not sire if they are the same..but, on our '52 JD "B"s, we had to change the Power-trol Plugs, for the Remote Cylinder to operate..
I think the plugs for the Remote Cylinder were open straight through and the ones for "Rock-Shaft" were closed on the inside end..

Mine is set up like this. I have the elbows with the Pioneer fittings and I have the regular plug on the bottom and a bayonet plug with a pipe plug on the end at the top. Set up this way when the PowerTrol lever is pulled the rockshaft moves first and then the cylinder. Pull the lever the other way and the cylinder reverses and then the same for the rockshaft. The bayonet fitting is the one that people used to put the quick coupler on. When it's set up like mine you don't have to remove plugs or fool with anything to use the lift arms or a cylinder. Not always the handiest setup but it works.

That tractor (a '46 long hood) is at me brother's place a hundred miles from here. I been threatening to do it to my '44 hand start too but just ahven't gotten it done. Maybe this will get me to re-shuffle priorities!

My B has two couplers on the side ports. They only work with the "solid" or rockshaft plugs in the powertrol, and will only provide single action operation if I remember right. The best solution is to get the correct "remote" powertrol plugs and put pioneer female couplers on them. Then you can close the selector valve, which is under a capnut on the Powertrol housing, so you have double action to your cylinder. If you don't know how to close the selector valve check your manual. This is the method I use and it works fine.
