pre cleaner close ups.

I bought a box at an auction that had a real nice p.t.0. cover that is red with the Dearborn sticker on it. It was just old and cool, -do I need another reason to drag a box home. Ha Ha.
there is also a VERY nasty, oily, airfilter assembly and an external cyclone with the jar. They are really rought, but there is a paper tag, written by the owner, that says its off a TO20. I the assembly has a different top than my To20, as it does NOT have the mesh opening at the top like my TO20 does. it is instead, a solid cap with a wingnut on the top center. It also has two inlet/outlet tubes-one going to the carb, and the other going WHERE???
I do not know if these two (the air filter and the cyclone)are made to work together...?
My The cyclone has a mounting bracket on one side...not like the ones that mount to the louvered panel on a N series FORD.
What I was wondering is if anyone could direct me to some pics of a TO20 or a TO30 with the cyclone pre filter installed? I would like to see if that is what mine looks like, and what elbows and adapters I will need.
It is grey..that is the only reason I have interest in it. I just cant seem to find any detailed photos of "under the hood" to see what I got.
thanks fella, Mark

Is that jar thats hooked to a hose coming from the carb called a cyclone filter? I have one on my TO20 but didnt know exactly what it was called , i have only had my TO20 a couple of weeks and mine has that glass jar but it has duct tape around the top part of the jar, dont know why yet, guess I need to pull that tape off and see what the problem is, hope u r able to find what you are looking for.

The precleaners were made for sandy conditions. The sand would settle in the glass jar before entering the oil breather. I have one on my TO20 and it still has the original jar, I think it has air filtration company stamped on it (or something like that).

It may take a couple of days by I can get pictures if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Mark,

Where is the second inlet/outlet? And, how big is it? If it is near the top, on the intake and ~1/2" in diameter then the air cleaner is from a TEA-20. The Standard motor vented the engine case to the air intake.

Parts 37, 38, 39 in the diagram.

You can see the pipe in the picture hiding behind the exhaust. It attaches to the case behind the carb.

Note: Left side of diagram shows a TEA-20 (80mm styles) and the photo is of an -85mm engine, thus the air intake was through the dash.

here are some pictures of my precleaner. The last shows how it mounts to the engine and the manifold. I hope it helps.

thanks Jeff, it is NOT like the one you have shown. Both outlets/inlets are the same size and much bigger.
The one I have is closer to the other pic. I dont think my cyclone is mounted facing forward-however.
I think I'll take a pic and see what you fella think. Thank you again for the pics. Mark

thanks Jim, definitely close to mine.
I'll try to put some pics on.
Your pics are exactly what I needed, at least I can see what the missing "rubber" components may look like and what shape they need be.
Thank you for taking the time to post them.

Hey jim, What kind of carb, is that in your picture?its identical to the one thats on my TO-20, Just curious, I was wondering on the lever on the front of the engine for the governer how much should it move, or how much free play should be on that lever on the front of the timing gear cover? I would like to make sure the govener is adjusted properly. thanks Hollis

Hollis,

It's been 14 years since I restored that tractor and I am not sure off the top of my head on the linkage. I just adjusted it by what he manual said. Sorry I cant be of more help.

I am pretty sure the carb is the Marvel-Schebler. It's the one that came with the tractor.

thanks Jim,
Upon further review, I think mine is JUST like yours. Your pic (ON) the tractor is of great benefit as I always thought the "seperator" always faced out to the side--line on the Ford N series. I never have seen one that face forward as yours does.
I think mine has a different mounting bracket, so I'll have to just hold her up to my tractor and see if the bracket on mine looks like it could "line up" with anything on my tractor.
A big thanks to you again.
Mark

Mark,

This one has been on the tractor all my life, it was my dad's originally and I am sure it is all original. I bought a second TO20 this past fall that my daughter wants to fix up and take to shows. It had a precleaner on it that someone had cut up and turned around to face the rear. They thought they could get rid of the breather and keep things clear of sand with just the precleaner. They were wrong, the engine was a mess.

So the precleaner and breather combo does work as my tractor engine was in much better shape

Let me know what you end up doing with it.
