Preparing Motor

Hi I am getting the head back from the machine shop in a couple days along with a head gasket and oil filter. Before I put the head back on, is there anything I should do before I put the head on and everything back together (I just got the motor freed up)

Any tips, ideas etc???

i would drop the main caps and check the bearings and crankshaft, also take a look at the rod bearing. like el toro asked, what do the cylinders look like? did you pull a piston and look at the rings? the rings may be rusted up in the pistons. heres a couple pics of my super m motor, sat in a barn many years, got it stuck. rings were junk, lifter bottoms were rusty, mains and rods were marginal, rust dirt and moisture. its getting a major, crank cut, bearings, pistons sleeves, valve job ect.

The cylinders are surprisingly nice. After i took the head off I cleaned up the cylinder walls and the pistons. Then I sprayed PB pipe blaster on top and in a couple days it loosened up. the only thing keeping the pistons from moving was a small patch of carbon build up or something on the wall it was the size of a quarter. I took it off with a whetstone an now the motor turns nice!!

As for the rings, the upper most visible rings look good, they had a little surface rust (more like discoloring) nothing was really corroded.

I don't plan on working on the crank shaft etc. (the motor is on the tractor) So after I get the head back I've got to put everything back together.

Anybody have any suggestions for Carb rebuild kits if necessary?

Pull the pistons and rods clear out and get a good cylinder hone a slow speed 1/2 drill and hone them to a cross hatch pattern then replace all rings and you may just be OK. It took my LA quite sometime for the rings to seat good.

Better pull the pistons and hone the walls as suggested. Then better check the bearings both rod and mains cause the good head aint no good if the bottom of the engine is ready to explode

I must agree drop the pan and pull out the pistons and check everything rods and mains and oil pump ,bacause you will just be wasting money if something in the bottom lets go and bends the valves .

How did the bearings look on the rods. They"re pretty cheap (about $10-13 for each rod) and now"s the time to put them in. You can also get "in-frame" bearings for the mains as well. Good luck.

Yea i know that but taking the pistons out and all that, wont it be difficult to hone the cylinders etc when the motor is mounted?

if your careful and cover up crank shaft to avoid damage from grit and hitting it you should have a pretty easy time if you just watch what your doing .
