I'm looking into getting a press for my father inlaw this Christmas. What are the benefits of an A frame press in comparison to the standard arrangement. How many ton press would be necessary to do typical equipment repairs (u-joints, etc.) Whats your opinion?

I have been getting away with a 12 ton press, and I use it to work on tractors such as my JD 730D.

If I ever need a big press, it would have to be a 50 ton or a 100 ton.

But for basic repair, i'm surprised how well I can get away with using this 12 ton that I found in a dumpster.

The normal size press seen in most shops is in the 50 ton range. Some things take a lot more pressure that you would think. A few weeks ago, I had to press a tie-rod end out of a MF steering arm. Even with some heat from a torch, it took almost 40 tons to break loose.

Not sure about the configurations, but the normal style of press is referred to as an H-Frame.

I've got the 12 ton. works good but, now and again it's not quite enough for some jobs. I plan on replacing it with a 20 ton.

I like the looks of an "A" frame press. When reserching presses , the "H" frame presses went higher in tonnage , along with more room for the work piece. I haven't bought one yet. I'd buy a 20 tonner.
