Pressed Wheel Fabrication Questions

I am currently working on changing the offsets on a pair of pressed steel wheels that I bought. The centers are spot welded to the rim. What is the cleanest and most effective way to go about removing the centers?

i had the problem of the off set not working on my tractor so i made a jig that would fit in the open circle and clamp down and had a arm that would come off the stationary point of the open circle that would rotate 360 degrees i clamped the head of a plasma cutter using a hose clamp cutting a perfect circle and the flipping the dish over and re welding in ,i only cut about a 24 inch circle out ,nice thing about this is you can weld them in with the tire still mounted to the rim if u need a picture i can send u one not good on explaining

The nicest, cleanest way is to drill out each spot weld down to the rim without drilling into the rim. When you have the dish in the new position attach it by MIG welding a "plug weld" though each of the drilled holes and into the rim. With a little practice, you can make it hard to tell the job was ever done. .035-.045 MIG wire if you have it.

one thing you could do find spotwelds, check diameter of spots an drillout, most likely is 3/4,or7/8 dia. drill out take sledge hamer a knock center out.find a piece of alum an fill whole with weld an grind off before rewelding center in. good luck. dan my phoneis 1-937-483-8630

I didnt think about what the other guys were saying. I've seen 3 types of rims. Rivets, spot welds and welded like i believe you have based on your description. On the tractor side of the rim there will probably be 2- 1"long welds where the center touches the rim. I just take a cutting disc and cut the welds. Be careful not to cut into the rim. It's not game over if you do though, just fill it in with weld and grind back smooth.
