Pricey Baldwin filters

I did an oil and filter change on my Super C back on September in 2023. I went to my usual mom-and-pop parts store. The Baldwin PT71 filter was $6.00 all said and done. Since I had the valve cover off and readjusted the valves, thought it would be a good idea to change oil just in case something fell in the oil as I was messing with the valves. Back to the store yesterday and got another filter and it came to $16.00. I asked the counter guy about the price increase and he said Baldwin had a big price increase not long ago. The metal-clad ones were worse. I guess you just have to live with it. That is still a pretty big price increase for a cartridge filter.

Did they ever fix the spigot end that fits in the block? I had a few PT71’s that just fell in the hole… they wouldn’t take them back because I had them 30 days. Had to use a fat o-ring on the spigot to seal it up.

Just spent $16 today on a filter for my little Kubota. Is what it is. Better to use the best possible parts and fluids - cheap insurance.

Did they ever fix the spigot end that fits in the block? I had a few PT71’s that just fell in the hole… they wouldn’t take them back because I had them 30 days. Had to use a fat o-ring on the spigot to seal it up.

I have changed my maybe 3 or 4 times. Baldwin and Wix filters both fit like that. The canister holds the bottom of the filter down tight against the plate at the bottom of the housing. If you look at a stigmatic of the oiling system on these engines, very little oil passes through the filter. Most of it runs straight back into the oil pan.

Rock Auto shows the PT71 Baldwin filter at 9.20 each. Obviously you pay a little for shipping, but may save you money if you order multiples like I do with my stock orders. I find quite a few Wix filters on "warehouse closeout" which have been as low as 2.12 per filter. The boxes are dusty or torn, but the product is fine and still in the plastic wrap. Just a thought when I order 8 to 10 at a time.

I'vew probably got a life time supply of filters for our H and MD. I try to keep a couple sets of filters for each tractor plus the rest of the equipment. Occasionally I get caught with my pants down for filters if we have had a lot of use of one tractor or not looked at what is there before we get filters. 16.00 is a lot but some of them for some of the other models are close to or are at the 100.00 per figure now. Sucks but not going to buy cheap filters just to save a buck then spend thousands on parts to make up for it. In the long run oil and filters are cheap compared to buying parts just like Grease. I used to get teased for greasing my trucks every week or about 2500-3000 miles. Then one day a friend of mine asked if my front end popped when I turned I said no, and he needed to grease his more if it did. He admitted he only greased it at oil changes. About every 10,000-15,000 miles. My last truck was a new one and still has the original spring bushings in it and suspension bushings. With 1,200,000 on it I had the bushings checked at about 800,000to a million and they said they looked like new yet and put it back together again. Front spring bushings last time they were looked at was at about 600,000or so and was told they looked like new and were tight as new ones. Guy said he had never seen bushings and pins in springs that tight with those miles on it. Grease is cheap even if you just use the cheap stuff.

When the filter is not used across multiple models and/or brands of machines the market dwindles.
Manufacturer's reduce or stop making them, letting some other maker to continue.
Eventually there might be only one maker then they can charge whatever they want.

Sooo what kind of grease do you recommend? Go to the grease store and they have all kinds of options with additives such as Moly and colors such as red. All kinds of prices as well. Thanks.

So about a month ago, I purchased some Napa Gold 3080’s for my Farmall 656. Same filter I use in the 460, 504 and 706 tractors. So yesterday my brother needed two for his 656. Look at the picture and difference in the filters. The ones I got a month ago have the metal encasing the filter. The ones I picked up yesterday do not. They call them gold, but are made cheaper. I guess it is time to look someplace other than Napa.

As far as I know, all NAPA Gold filters are made by WIX.
But could be possibly by other for that model.

Aren't some of those IH oil filters filtering backwards, i.e. dirty oil flows from inside to outside of the filter.
Seems the outside "can" would be there to prevent the media from ballooning.

Filters are not so much a money maker as they are a draw the crowd in thing or at least that used to be the case. The money was in the oil and parts not so much with the filters.

As far as I know, all NAPA Gold filters are made by WIX.
But could be possibly by other for that model.

The equivalent Wix filter that fits the N Fords and TO-30 fergys are very well made.

I was looking over filters this spring for both Tractors.

Some filters will work flow either way, some are designed to flow in, or out.
