What is the best primer for galvanized metal? I read about Rustoleum Aluminum and galvanized primer that sees to be adequate for the job. Any opinions?

i like an etching primer, so yeah.. rustoleum products are a good choice.. they make a rusty metal primer, and a VERY rusty metal primer.

both have worked good at holding onto galvanized metal for me.

back a hundred years ago we would wash new metal down with vinegar.i was looking to paint the old metal on the chicken house(another project i havent gotton to yet) and bought some primer from lowes made by rustoleum for rusty metal.there was two types, one for new and one for rusty metal.those were the only ones out of all their primers that said said it would work on galv metal.I always wondered if those spray on galv coatings you see around would work but i've never tried it.

I just finished painting my 60 year old steel-galvanized-previous "oil base" paint roof with "Benjaman-Moore oil base paint", per recommendation of an ole reliable paint store (50 years experience owners). It contains it own primer and was applied in one coat. The recommended I presure wash it (3000PSI)and old loose loose abhered paint, plus rust came off. It was hard getting a dealer that carried this product. Most stores will try and sell you acyric (latex). My old-experienced-specialist roof painter, said I got good advice and good paint, for these conditions.

This week I had to build 16 deck railing inserts for a customers deck.

Basically he built his deck and added vertical posts and top rails.

He wanted me to build decorative inserts that will bolt inside the framed in sections.

I built the insert sections from one inch square tubing and he wanted cattle feed lot panels welded in them to fill in the openings.

The cattle feed lot panels are galvanized.

He wanted me to paint them all with a cold galvanized epoxy paint.

So.....I used valspars galvanized primer on the cattle panels and regular primer on the mild steel frames.

The galvanized primer worked great.
I wanted to use it like the instructions suggested so the cold galvanized paint would stick for a long time on the factory galvanized panels.

I will say this.....The cold galvanized paint went on great and I liked it.

I will be using it on some of my own projects in the future.

I would use the correct primer on galvanized material.

Nothing like having to do it all over again because it did not stick right!

It can be tempting to just shoot your galvanized metal with good old oil base primer but if there is any chance it will not adhere correctly it is not worth it.

I have never thought about the vinegar on galvanized metal........I will have to try it.

You learn something new here every day!

Thanks.......

Paint manufacturers will make a primer for use on galvanized surfaces. Some will also recommend using a wash prior to the primer, such as a Surface Conditioner or a Vinyl Wash Pretreatment. The vinegar might work just was well - what you want is something without hydrocarbons and will not leave an oily residue.

Water based 100% acrylic paints are fine to use on top of the primer. The better paints will have a higher % of solids by weight. For example, the Sherwin Williams Duration has 53% solids by weight, and their A-100 product is 48% solids by weight. "Solids" is basically the paint after everything else has dried off.
