Problems with Injector Pump and Fuel

Have a commercial version of the MF165 that I bought used about 10 years ago; use it primarily for food plots and mowing. Let it run out of diesel fuel a few weeks ago and was able to get it started afterward. However, after sitting for a couple of weeks, unable to get it to start. A buddy of mine and I have bled the air from the lines (according to the steps in the manual) and changed filters. Can get fuel (at times) to the compression fittings at the each of the 4 injectors but it does not seem to be consistent (in other words, sometimes fuel is forced out and sometimes not). Any ideas on what it might be? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Sounds like fuel starvation.
Have you checked the filter on top of the fuel tap in the tank? It is a nylon strainer. If you do not have one on the tap, the tap may be blocked. If you have a glass bowl on the lift pump there is a gauze above it, that can be blocked. If you are sure that the filters are full you should be able to pump fuel out through the small screw vents on the main pump. Anything from a consistent dribble to a jet is OK. Slacken the four injector nuts until you have fuel coming from the four. The engine should then start when the nuts are tightened. We have had it happen quite a few times where depending on the condition of the engine and fuel system the tractor will not start even with a second battery.
Tow it to try but only use a rope not a chain for the first time. Should be OK after.

I've had this happen after running my 65 out of diesel. Cat loader too. Clogged fuel valve coming out of the tank. Try blowing some compressed air back up into the tank to clear the sediment.

This past weekend, we tried the suggestions, including towing my tractor with a friend"s. So far, nothing has been successful. I was not able to get fuel to come out when the compression nuts were loosened (had been able to do so earlier), but was getting fuel from the screw vents (# 3 and # 4) on the main injector pump.

Any possibility that the injector pump has gone bad, and if so, any suggestions on a good source (internet) for replacement pumps? Have looked on Yesterdays Tractors but do not see injector pumps available.

have you primed the pump with the lever on the lift pump? if the pump can pull and push the fuel through without much effort you may have to look closer at the injector pump. pull off the fuel inlet going to the pump and have a friend pump the lift pump (MANUALLY)if there is pressure on your finger and doesnt drop immediatly all is good to there,
If the pump cant reach pressure or drops as soon as the next stroke on the pump then the lift pump has gone and cant supply fuel to the injector pump it may be only getting it by gravity which would give a hit and miss when cranking the engine. maybe this is of some help
changing the filters has solved that part but maybe the filter in the tank? my indstrial has clear pipe coming into the lift pump so is handy to trace air bubbles

Broken tractor.com (one word) sells brand new injector pumps, as well as walt"s tractor parts $600. and up. Almost the same as a rebuild of your old one.
