Problems with John Deere 70 Gas

Bought this tractor a year or two ago and use it a couple times a month. All of a sudden it is not running right. It will start but it misses acts like it wants to backfire. If I choke it it will smooth out somewhat and then it will die. Wait a few minutes and it will start again. Was too busy to mess with it this weekend. I just used another tractor. I had changed the plug wires awhile back as the old ones were falling apart. But it ran ok right after I changed it. Thought I'd ask you experts where to start. I have two manuals with the tractor and not with me right now. Think it's a fuel supply issue or something else. I did clean the sediment bowl and took a little junk out of it. Gas tank looks ok as far as I could see from the top. Time to rebuild the carb ? Fuel bowl filled quickly when I started it after cleaning the sediment bowl. Gas is fresh.

Try a new condenser. Those little guys will make a tractor seem like it has fuel or carb issues.

If It has the oil pressure shut off system on it make sure its working right. My diaphrams were shot and eventually the oil was so diluted with gas that it wouldn't have enough pressure to work the shut off switch. My 70 was doing the same thing as yours and that was my problem. Check the oil and make sure its not diluted to much.

MSD is right. Try a new condenser first. It's easier than going through the whole fuel system, only to find out you haven't improved anything except having the peace of mind that your fuel system is now clean.

The condensers on my two bangers seem to go bad every couple years now, where years ago they almost never went bad. The muffler on my 630 is now oval in two directions from a muffler explosion caused by a bad condenser.Jim

The old saying if it can not be fixed with a hammer it must be an electriacl problem. I agree with the rest. Just might want to check the plug wires?

sounds like fuel issue if you pull the choke to keep it running ive had same issue on my 730 . it sat for along time before i bought it. after its runs junk in tank would plug opening in tank to sediment bowl. i un screwed the whole bowl unit from tank and flushed tank out several times and rebuilt carb never quit again

Thanks for your replies. This weekend I'm going to examine the gas tank again , check the oil and replace the condensor. If that doesn't fix it , I'll solicit you folks for plan B
