Proofmeter repair

I have a 1960 661 (five-speed)...proofmeter seems to work OK, but the face has completely rusted and is unreadable. Has anyone had sucess replacing the face? Is it possible to take the meter apart & repair? I know most of them have a pressed-on ring which cannot be removed/replaced easily.

I can find a replacement cheap enough but I would rather preserve the run-hours on the current meter. Better reflection of the useage.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks, Steve.

I've seen some replacement decals.. not sure if one is offered for your machine.. but it is worth a check.

The trick is to pry up the bezel without ruining anything.

For future reference...

Took the meter off last night. Disconnect the cable, remove the two nuts off the bracket underneath, then pull the meter out from the top. The ring around the glass front (glass, not plastic!) can be bent on the back to remove the ring. Loosen the screws on the back about halfway and then tap the back of the screws. The internals of the meter will come loose...you can then pull it out from the front (after removing the screws, of course).

Much easier than the vintage japanese bikes I work on...the metal ring is pressed on and must be cut off, one-way trip.

Steve.
