PTO Adapter

So I finally bought a rough mower for my 2n. I put an adapter sleeve on it for the 1 1/8" to 1 3/8". Anyway, the adapter sleeve is longer than the 2n shaft and the safety cap interferes with the sleeve when the PTO shaft is not installed.

Is it alright to cut down this adapter sleeve so that is clears the saftey cap?

Ck1.......ahh yes, adapter sleeves. the cheap SOB's. Yes, you can "trim" the sleeve for length. Iff'n it don't work, you just ruined a $10 sleeve. big deal, eh?

HOWSOMEVERS; we STRONGLY advise using an ORC (Over Running Coupler) to couple yer rough mower. They come with 1-1/8F input to match yer 1-1/8M PTO and then have a 1-3/8M output to match modern 3-point shredders.

Without an ORC, all that swinging blade centrifugal force will BACKDRIVE yer tranny when you clutch to slowdown to go around the corner of the barn, litepole, creekbank, irrigation ditch, wifes car (don't ask) $60 (cheap) .......Dell, yer ORC Safety Preacher

Thank you for the input. I do have an ORC mounted at the mower end of the PTO shaft. I wasn"t able to find a ORC with a 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 adapter built in.

The sales guy convinced my to put the ORC down at the mower since it would be safer since the ORC could snag something. I completely understand that you shouldn"t get off with the PTO spinning so that shouldn"t be an issue. I couldn"t think of a physics reason for what end it should be on over the other end.

But yes, i agree that a ORC is a requirement.

ck1......me? I'd gitt on yer salesman lazy azz. 1-1/8F to 1-3/8M ORC's are readily available. Even our host Yesterdays Tractors sell'em.

PTO Overide Clutch - Overide Coupler For converting 1 1 8" Male To 1 3 8" Male, (Has 1 1 8" female at one end and 1 3 8" Male at the other)6-Spline Free-wheels smoothly when implement exceeds PTO speed. WARNING: The use of PTO adapters can be hazardous if not used with adequate protection such that ASABE standard S318.16 requires suitable shielding be provided "for any device intended for installation between the tractor PTO shaft and the implement input driveline". (Part No: C670F) $44.85 (cheap) ......HTH, Dell the ORC Safety Preacher

Sounds like you need to shop some place else since the sales guy didn't have a clue what he was talking about. Common in my area but they learn fast or run away from me when I come looking for stuff since they know I know what I want and that it is in fact a real part

ck1......'cuz that is WHERE they are made to be installed, ON the TRACTOR PTO shaft, not on the shredder. Simple, eh? .......respectfully, Dell

ordered an ORC from this sight and will return the ORC that I bought locally. Actually saved me ~$80.

I really just wanted to know the failure mode of mounting it at the mower gearbox. Sorry, I am an engineer and just need to know :)
