PTO engagement

My ford tractor will not engage the pto when trying to run attachments. I have to move the lever forward when the tractor is not running and then it will start. My tractor is a 1962 861 Ford. I would appreciate any info as I am new to tractor ownership.

Guessing you need a clutch adjustment. They have a 2 stage clutch. Push it down half way to stop the tractor,all the way to stop the PTO. You have to have it all the way down to engage the PTO lever. If it won't go,like I said,it needs adjusting.

Maybe you need to move the pin on the clutch linkage so that the pedal comes up higher. There are 2 holes on it.

push the pedal down while somebodyelse is looking. good chance you are stoping at the 2cd stage clutch. grab the seat and push as hard as you can and then see if it dosn't work ok.

OK, the 861 has a "two-stage" clutch which provides "live" PTO. That means you can release the transmission clutch and still provide power to the PTO by only pushing the clutch pedal halfway down. Push the clutch pedal all the way down should release the PTO clutch.

If you're grinding the PTO with the clutch pedal all the way down, then the pedal is probably misadjusted. When properly adjusted, the clutch pedal will be about 10-1/2 inches above the footrest when pedal is not depressed.
