PTO hydraulic pump seal

I have an old Gresen PTO hydraulic pump that I bought at an auction. When ai Went to use it I found that the input seal leaked. I too the number to a local bearing shop and they crossed it to a new number, however, the new seal is only about 3/16 thick whil the old one was more like 5/16. The new seal leaks pretty bad. The shaft looked OK when we put the new seal in. Then new seal looks like a grease seal from a wheel bearing, while the old one had metal on both sides. DOes anyone know if there is a certain type o seal for hydraulic pumps, or the pressure (I"m not really sure how much pressure is on the output shaft of a gear pump. The old seal is a CR1501K210 It has a 1 inch shaft and a 1.5" bore.

Modern seals are generally narrower and not metal shielded like the older style. Shaft seal will be in the low pressure area of the pump.

Go to the link and enter your p/n 1501K210, crosses to SKF (chicago Rawhide) seal p/n 9876. Click on the 9876 to view the dimensions.

I've bought a couple dozen seals from Napa using this p/n interchange to cross to the CR p/n and haven't gotten a wrong seal yet. Maybe just lucky.

I found that same SKF crossover, the guy at the bearing shop said that didn't seem right, and gave us a different one. Looked like the right fit, just thinner with less metal on it.

So if the new seal is leaking right away, what should I look for as a cause?? The shaft looked pretty good. Maybe the brass bushing/bearing is worn and we should replace that?

I am not familar with that pump. Check the shaft for slop that indicates worn bearings.

The new seal is narrower than the original and the lip of the seal may be riding partly on the ridge of a wear area. You may be able to shim the seal in the bore for a better wear surface. If excessive shaft wear, speedi-sleeve may be an option.

New CR seal from Napa shouldn't cost more than $10 or so.

I will have to check again to see if there is any slop in the shaft, and see where the seal is riding.

I was just making sure I wasn't missing anything.
