when using flail mower under heavy load such as tall grass it will start knocking inside the trans case.slower speed to lighten load and it goes away. Can someone tell me what is going on? Is it likely to brake something? What should I look for if I open up the case Thanks eldon

Hi,
Its possible that you have wear on or a broken pump dowel. These dowels hold the pump in place in the casing. If you follow the handbrake rods you will come to a pivot point. The pivot point is hel with 2 nuts. The pump dowel is on the other side of this. Remove the rods and withdraw the dowel. Inspect for wear. The pump may 'drop' slightly. Refitment can usually be achieved by engaging the PTO (mechanical PTO, engine off)and wedging the clutch pedal right down. Have an assistant turn the PTO clockwise and the pump hole should line up. There are other possibilities for a knock inside the casing but this would entail removal of the hydraulic cover as a starting point.

We have had several MF that did this, but only when turning left handed. Ran them for years never had an issue with it.
