PTO shaft

I have an New Idea sickle bar mower with a rusted PTO shaft. It just will not move in or out at all. Is there a good way to free it or would I be better off cutting it off and buying a new shaft?

If you can lift the end up so its almost stright up in the air then fill it with tranny fluid or something like that. Let it soak for a week or 2. It may take adding fluid to it every few days. Also if you could heat it up a good bit that will help. Then a big hammer and some playing with it will probably free it up BTDT on more then one machine

Hi Old,

Adding heat to any rotating part has to be given some very special consideration as most steel will loose it's temper at 500º.

Temper in steel is what makes steel return to the design shape each time it's pushed to the stress limits. Remove the temper and the steel will most likely stay close to the maximum design stress limits. On a rotating part that would have disterous results as it would self distruct.

Vinegar also disolves rust.

Here's what I did. I made a small cable loop at each end through the U-joint,then hooked each cable to a parked tractor with a come-a-long on one end. Stressed it with the line doubled on the come-a-long as much as I could, then heated that sucker until it was damm hot ,smacked the u-joint with a 3lb. hammer, more heat, more hammer and I'll be darned if it didn't give up and come apart.

True to a point but I also make a good number of PTO shafts and the only way to do that is weld them so they get a lot of heat and so far I have never had a problem. I've made over 100 of them. Welding the ends on does heat them up to above 1200 degrees so not sure if I can agree with you on this

The last time I had one I couldn't get apart I used the winch on my utility trailer and two blocked it . Then still had to hit with hammer .
when I checked shaft out it was twisted . ended up junking it . Wasted all that work .
