Compare the 2 side by side. If you had to shorten the clutch shaft your 88 PTO shaft may be too long. I think the transmission case on a 77 is shorter.

if you use the 88 engines rear motor mount holes in the stock rear 77 frame holes every thing from there back will bolt right in , including the drive shaft, the pto, the clutch linkage and steering shaft. all the 0liver engines fromthe 310 to the 194 and the 320 are the same from the rear motor mount holes back. you will have to drill new motor mount holes for the front. you may have to slide the radiator ahead, to do this just take the 4 bolts that hold the rad. tothe shell and slide it foward the reguired amount, about 11/2" and drill new holes in the shroud and bolt it in. the shortened drive shaft will not work, but either a 77 or 88 shaft will. good luck chuck

The engine will bolt right in, no modification necessary, & the drive shaft needs to be shortened, which I have done. My only issue is PTO shaft. I will use the 77.

when i put a 310 in my 77 which has a super frame i did not have to shorten the drive shaft and everything fit perfectly, i used the 77 shaft. the 88 engine is about 2"s longer than the 77. are you sure you have a 88 engine? maybe the shaft you have is from a 770, which woul need to be shortened. chuck.
