Does a pto turn faster on a live pto than on my to30 that does not have a live pto? I need to travel slow due to hills while bush-hogging but I need the bush-hog to run fast. Grass etc nearly waist high. Thanks larry
Spam is not welcome.

You ask a loaded question. Standard is 540 plus or minus 10 RPM. Makes no difference if it live or not that is the standard. Now some tractor get that speed at a reduced engine RPM compared to rated engine speed. So what 2 tractors are you comparing?

Thanks Hunter for the advice so quickly.

I was considering buying a tractor with live pto if I would gain anything over downshifting. Is there any gain other than live/notlive?

I really was not comparing tractors just wondering if I would gain pto speed seperate in some way if I had a live pto. 2nd gear is too fast and 1st is too slow on my TO20 with
a TO30 engine. I thought there might be a way to overcome that. Thanks larry

540 rpm is the standard of the industry for tractors and attachments in this size range. No variations. To remedy your problem you need a bigger tractor with more speeds.

Larry,

Once the grass gets "out-of-hand", and if you aren't able to get a sickle or have someone swath it for hay, about the only thing you can do is:

a) take it in first gear and realize the job will take a while,
b) rent / buy / borrow a tractor that has a better selection of forward speeds,
c) try taking a partial swath, and see if you can handle that in 2nd gear.

I think you get 540 pto rpm at about 1500 engine rpm. with your to30.That would be at half throttle+. Go in 1st.gear and take your time. If you start bogging down pull out and take a smaller cut.
